An urbex staple in Rochester, NY, packed with rusty wreckage and loads of urban art.
Founded in 1866 in Rochester, NY, by Hiram Everest and Matthew Ewing, the Vacuum Oil Company revolutionized lubricants using a vacuum distillation process. Located along the Genesee River/Erie Canal (near modern Exchange St), it became a major Standard Oil subsidiary in 1879 before merging to become Mobil Oil. Operations ceased around 1935, leaving significant contamination now being remediated under the New York State Brownfield Cleanup Program.
