The Deep Humanity of Alli Badar and Intertidal Wines
Alli Badar's background in dance gives her a unique physical intelligence that extends into all of her varied pursuits. She sees the connections and interplay of the world around her and is in physical, emotional and intellectual dialogue with everything she encounters. This kinesthetic empathy Alli has honed is now working its way into her wine at Intertidal.
Her path in winemaking from Fort Worth to Sonoma wasn’t a straight line, however. It involved years of night classes in organic chemistry while looking for a way out of tech, eventually leading to graduate research on smoke taint at UC Davis. Alli not only landed a job at Bedrock, she also entered an incredible system of support and mentorship under Katie Rouse and Cody Rasmussen. While Katie and Cody offer distinct perspectives on winemaking, both have helped cultivate Alli’s trust in her instincts and her palate.
Alli's dedication to the preservation of our ancient vines and the advancement of regenerative farming caught the eyes of generational grape-growers and SORBET (Sustainable Old-vine Regenerative Bottling & Ecological Trial) founders, Morgan Twain-Peterson, Sam Coturri, and Katie Bundschu. They asked Alli to help organize their first event in San Francisco, and the event is now expanding regionally.
The 'Intertidal' zone is the ever-changing space where the ocean meets the land. Rich in life and interstitial by definition, it occupies an awe-inspiring window into the complexity and beauty of the intersection of all things. Alli aspires to capture this exquisite experience in her wine--and she wants her wine to spark a conversation, an experience, a connection. Alli wants us all to be in dialogue with everything around us. She wants us all to dance more. Together.
As the UNFILTERED 2026 Winemaker to Watch, Alli will be pouring her 2024 Riesling (from 1970s organic vines) and her 2025 Evangelho Carignan on Saturday and Sunday. Both are studies in how to craft wines with acid-driven precision and textural depth, made with deep reverence for the soils that birth them.

We are in the middle of racking before bottling right now. It is hard to capture both the precision and perfectionism required for critical wine movements in the cellar, much of it done in what, from the outside, almost looks like chaos. Which barrel is going into which tank, which line is going where, where is the gas to use for bulldog racking (displacing wine with inert gas rather than pumping it), are the tanks being gassed to prevent oxidation? And with this, the delicacy that racking takes and the consequences of pulling a slug of lees from the bottom of the barrel if you go too fast or, for a just a second, lose focus. My favorite part of this capture is not just Alli’s story and how she came from a professional dance background to her MS in Fermentation Science, but also her hands, which look like an upright bassist’s or perhaps a very friendly spider.
