I am very grateful for the opportunity we had as a family to stay at the
@hemlock_micro_studio and the Lululiving spaces created by artist
@germkoh that are part of her Home Made Home initiative. Based in the Southern Gulf Islands in traditional territories of Coast Salish peoples including the Quw’utsun, Stz’uminus and W̱SÁNEĆ nations, these two micro dwellings are now in service as sites for artist residencies focused especially on land-based research and sustainability issues.
As part of my residency, my focus was to learn from Scotch broom and explore the possibilities that this plant offers as a textile by harvesting, cooking, stripping, pounding, carding, spinning and weaving it. Thinking about the journey of this plant to better understand not only the undesirable impacts of this species that makes her an “invasive” in this bioregion, but also the material, cultural and spiritual possibilities of this “immigrant” plant. As immigrants to this territory too, stewardship and repair are for us as a family a way to reciprocate while we learn how to be in right relation to this generous place that we love and call home.
As part of the community engagement component of this residency, I offered a Nettle for Textiles workshop at the
@all_thingy . This workshop invited people to explore different harvesting and fibre processing methods and how to spin and ply nettle fibre into yarn using green unretted and also previously retted stalks.
The
@all_thingy is a multi-purpose roadside production and presentation platform that references the ancient democratic assembly of Iceland. It is a place available for community use and production, expanding the possible forms of produce one might find on a regular farmstand.
Thank you,
@germkoh for being a great host, and to the wonderful community of Saltspring Island for joining the workshop. We are also grateful for the many gifts we received during our time there, including witnessing the aurora borealis for the first time!
