What an honour to direct Michaela Coel as part of the BMW x BFI filmmaking challenge launch film. The way this evolved into it’s final form was one of the most awing moments like watching seed grow into a plant before your eyes and see the amount of people who watered it to help it grow into the beauty it’s become. I couldn’t have been more grateful for every single name in the credits. My heart is so full from the fact that I got to start 2022 with a Ravyn Lenae music video and end it with my first commercial ever featuring Michaela Coel for BMW & the BFI. Last October, I decided to finally shoot my first personal project. Something I have procrastinated for over 10 years. My work has always set sails on the basis of realism. I had found safety under the guise of being a fly on the wall, to see without being seen. I didn’t believe in dictating what I saw, I believed in loving and capturing the truth of it all. However the irony is I capture dreams. My work in over 10 years is dedicated to capturing the reality of our greatest dreamers, our global stars. This ultimately resulted in me wanting to break the ice between dreams and reality. To show the magic that coexists, to know that dreams are capable of meeting reality. That pictures like paintings, and our reality like dreams, can be whatever we want them to be. And in tune with that I wanted my first project to be a dream of my own. And so here’s the pictures I shot and painted, to my short story “Written in the Stars” brought to life by Rio, starring above. I want to also thank everyone who came to the reading a few weeks ago. I’ve very vaguely shared my writing in the past, but to give it a voice was an insane honour and privilege. So thank you for indulging me and being apart of that ♥️ I hope to share the full story as a physical once I’m back from touring. Its been a beautiful year of work, and in between that I’ve been shaping this, so its taken some time to find its form but I hope to share it far and wide when the time comes. Until then hopefully I don’t lose the courage to do more of this haha. Last but not least, thank you to my greatest friends for helping me achieve this.
