Last night, Marcia Hutchinson won the Discover Prize at the British Book Awards for The Mercy Step, published by @bibibakareyusuf ‘s Cassava Republic Press. We read it in one of my book clubs and, over the weekend, had the privilege of hearing Marcia speak about the journey behind it. You all need to read this book. More than fifty publishers said no before Cassava Republic Press said yes. Marcia published it at 62. Let that sit with every one of us still building, still knocking, still refusing to accept that time has passed us by. I have watched Cassava Republic Press from the very beginning: connected them to their first author, supported their first book tour, sponsored their Global Black Women’s Nonfiction Prize, and championed their children’s books in African languages. I have seen up close what it costs to build something the market says cannot be done — and to do it with beauty, discipline, courage and excellence anyway. This year, Cassava Republic Press turns 20. The Mercy Step is also shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, with the winner announced on 11 June. This is not luck. It is twenty years of stubbornness, sacrifice, patient institution-building and an unshakeable belief that Black stories belong everywhere — not only on our shelves, but on the world’s stage. To my fellow founders, investors and business leaders: Cassava Republic Press needs us. Not only as readers, but as partners, sponsors and people willing to show up before the accolades arrive. The margins may be thin. The work is extraordinary. That is precisely why we must lean in. Congratulations to Marcia Hutchinson and the entire Cassava Republic Press family. What a magnificent vindication. #BritishBookAwards #TheMercyStep #CassavaRepublicPress #WomensPrizeForFiction #AfricanPublishing GenderLensInvesting InvestInWomen PatientCapital

In 2014, Alitheia IDF raised a question that Africa's capital markets had never properly answered. If women build half the continent's enterprises: founding businesses, running farms, anchoring supply chains, why do they receive a fraction of its investment? Ten years later, across 12 companies in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Zambia, the answer is no longer a thesis. It is data. 24,000 (direct & indirect) jobs — 54% held by women, 55% by people under 35 across value chains, supplier networks, and communities. Up to 87% Revenue growth post-investment and up to 462% CAGR across portfolios. 74% of employees directly linking their company's growth to improved inclusivity. Africa's first cassava-based sorbitol plant. Zambia's first women-led digital bank. The continent's first goat-cashmere value chain, from raw fibre to finished garment, and so much more. These are not outcomes despite the gender lens. They are outcomes because of it. Over the coming weeks, we will share what that evidence looks like, company by company, number by number, person by person. The case for gender-smart investing in Africa is no longer being made. It has been made. #alitheiaidf #alitheiacapital #genderlensinvesting #privateequity

In Q1 2026, we saw the kind of outcomes that make the case for intentional investing clear. A company we backed in 2021 has grown its team from 70 to over 400 people. Another closed a $24M round and reached profitability in the same quarter. One of our portfolio companies redeemed ₦1.28B in commercial paper on schedule. We were also recognised as Impact Investor of the Year for the second consecutive year. These are not isolated wins. They reflect what happens when disciplined capital meets strong founders with a clear path to scale. We stay close to the work, support governance, and back decisions that strengthen long-term performance. This is how value is built. Quietly, consistently, and with a clear view of what the market often overlooks. Our Q1 update is live. we invite you to watch and engage. #alitheiacapital

The real opportunity in Africa is not just backing winners. It is backing fund managers who understand how markets are built. FSD Africa’s latest impact report reinforces a point we have long held at Alitheia Capital: sustainable impact comes from investing with intention, discipline, and deep market insight. As investors on the continent, the work goes beyond capital deployment. It is also about shaping ecosystems, strengthening businesses, and unlocking long-term value where it matters most. Our Managing Partner, Tokunboh Ishmael, shares more on what this means for Alitheia Capital and the future of investing in Africa. Read more via the link in bio.

Meet Farida Adewale 👋🏽 She’s an Investment Fellow (Value Creation & ESG) at Alitheia Capital , and on today’s episode of the Alitheia Capital Playbook, she unpacks what value creation really means to us. Farida takes us through: • How we think about value beyond just financial returns • The end-to-end process of driving value from investment to exit • What happens on the team side and the company side to unlock growth • How ESG is embedded into our approach, not treated as an afterthought Because at Alitheia Capital, value creation isn’t a buzzword , but a deliberate, hands-on process that ensures businesses grow sustainably while delivering measurable impact. If you’ve ever wondered what happens after the investment cheque is written, this is one you don’t want to miss. 💬 Founders & operators: What kind of support do you wish investors provided beyond capital? Let’s talk in the comments.

As International Women’s Month comes to an end, our Co-Founder Olajumoke Akinwunmi closes our IWD video series with a clear stance that investing in women delivers measurable results. Across our portfolio companies, we have seen firsthand that women-led and women-inclusive businesses strengthen decision-making, improve performance, and expand impact within their communities. The data has consistently proven that when women have access to capital and leadership opportunities, businesses grow stronger and more resilient. This campaign has reinforced what we already believe at Alitheia Capital that backing and investing in women is smart business. 🎥 Watch the concluding video. #alitheiacapital #iwd2026 #genderlensinvesting #privateequity

Women already sit at the centre of retail across Africa as traders, shop owners, and the backbone of everyday distribution. What’s missing is not participation, but the systems that enable them to scale, formalise, and capture more value. This International Women’s Month, we spotlight @OmniRetail , a portfolio company of Alitheia Capital through the Umunthu Fund, building the infrastructure that strengthens how retail works from inventory access to credit and distribution. In this feature, Nkiruka Nima-Johnson, Investment Relations Lead, shares how OmniRetail is supporting the network women already power enabling them to operate more efficiently, grow sustainably, and deepen their role across the value chain. This is what gender-lens investing looks like in practice: recognising where women already lead, and backing the systems that help them do more, earn more, and scale with intention. 🎥 Watch the story. #GenderLensInvesting #alitheiacapital #privateequity

Who gets to participate in essential goods markets and at what level? This International Women’s Month, we spotlight Wemy Industries, a portfolio company of the Alitheia IDF, operating at the intersection of manufacturing and the care economy — where everyday products directly shape health, dignity, and access for millions. In this feature, we examine how investment is expanding access, redefining roles, and creating clearer pathways for women to grow across its operations and distribution network. This is where gender lens investing meets the care economy in practice, not theory. Because even in essential industries, inclusion does not happen by default, it is built, intentionally. 🎥 Watch the story. #GenderLensInvesting #InvestInWomen #CareEconomy #PortfolioStories #WomensMonth
