“Manuscripts Conservation and Preservation Training in Libraries of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan”
We are proud to be actively implementing the project “Manuscripts Conservation and Preservation Training in Libraries of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan”, led by STERNA Heritage.
Funded by
@aliph_foundation and co-funded by the European Union (
@euinkazakhstan ,
@eudeluzb ), this initiative focuses on safeguarding the manuscript heritage of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan through specialized training in documentation and conservation.
In collaboration with the Al-Biruni Institute of Oriental Studies in Tashkent and the National Library of Kazakhstan in Almaty (
@ulttyq_kitapkhana ), the project addresses urgent risks affecting Islamic manuscript collections, while strengthening local conservation capacity and promoting sustainable, long-term preservation practices.
Through intensive, hands-on training missions, we work closely with local professionals from different institutions, sharing knowledge and practical skills in:
– preventive conservation
– environmental monitoring
– emergency response
– remedial conservation treatments
These remarkable collections, dating from the 10th to the early 20th century, include Qur’anic codices, scientific manuscripts, and literary works. Today, they face significant risks due to climate conditions, storage challenges, and limited conservation resources.
We would like to share some footage from our first training session with our instructors, Nikolas Sarris (
@niks4rr ) and Nil Baydar (
@nil_baydar ), at the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which has just come to a close.
It has been such an inspiring experience to collaborate, exchange knowledge, and contribute to the long-term safeguarding of such invaluable cultural heritage.
We look forward to continuing this important work in the next session.
