𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭. 8 March 2017, marked the creation of ALIPH and the beginning of the journey. Since then, the foundation has supported those protecting heritage when it is endangered by conflict or crisis — professionals, operators, public authorities, artisans and local communities. Its method can be summed up simply: respond quickly, work with the people directly concerned, and adapt each response to the reality of the context. This approach — agile, neutral, and collaborative — is what gives ALIPH its distinct role. Nine years on, the core remains the same: providing practical support where it can truly make a difference. 🎥 As the Foundation prepares to mark its tenth anniversary, this video looks back on the path ALIPH has travelled since its creation.

🏛️𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐣𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐬 The 18th-century Ujumbe Palace is one of the most important architectural testimonies of the former Sultanates of the Comoros and a remarkable example of Swahili coastal architecture. Today, the monument faces growing threats linked to structural degradation and climate vulnerability. Now, restoration work on this historic site in Mutsamudu will begin. This week, in the presence of H.E. Mr. Bajrafil, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Union of the Comoros to UNESCO, and H.E. Mr. Étienne Chapon, Ambassador of France to the Union of the Comoros, a ceremony was held to launch this initiative. Implemented by @patrimoinedescomores , the project will restore this monument using traditional techniques combined with climate-resilient methods. The project supports local skills and craftsmanship and draws on expertise from Zanzibar—an exchange of know-how that reflects ALIPH’s focus on building solidarity, dialogue, and regional cooperation. ALIPH is proud to be supporting this project alongside other partners, notably the Cooperation and Cultural Action Department of @france.komor , as well as @unesco and the @gerdahenkelstiftung 📷Collectif du Patrimoine des Comores

🌍🏛️ Closing Ceremony — Capacity Building Programme on Earthen Architecture & Climate Change On 11 May, we proudly concluded the ICOMOS Capacity-Building Programme on “Climate-Resilient Earthen Architecture in Africa”, hosted at the Royal Court of Tiébélé (Burkina Faso), a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over the past eight days, 25 emerging and mid-career heritage professionals from 16 African countries came together to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and deepen their understanding of the climate challenges threatening Africa’s earthen architectural heritage. Through bilingual (English–French) sessions, field-based learning, hands-on exercises, and dialogue grounded in local knowledge systems and African earthen building traditions, participants explored practical approaches to safeguarding vulnerable heritage sites in the face of floods, droughts, storms, and environmental degradation. This programme brought practitioners together to exchange knowledge and experiences, reinforcing a shared commitment to climate resilience and heritage conservation across the continent. To conclude this training, the participants had the chance to meet Mr Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouedraogo, Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism of Burkina Faso. Implemented by ICOMOS in collaboration with ICOMOS Burkina Faso, the initiative also benefited from the expertise of international and national experts, including members of ICOMOS ISCEAH (@isceah.icomos ) and the Climate Action Working Group. ✨ We warmly thank the International alliance for the protection of heritage (@aliph_foundation ) for its generous support in making this important initiative possible. 📍 Royal Court of Tiébélé, Burkina Faso Slide 1 & 7 📷 Zuhura Mtenguzi #CulturalHeritage #ClimateAction #EarthenArchitecture #WorldHeritage

The Temple is an exceptional Khmer monument dedicated to Shiva, with origins dating back to the 9th century. Implemented by @unesco in collaboration with the National Authorities for Preah Vihear (NAPV), the initiative will address structural instability, displaced stone elements, and unexploded ordnance, all of which threaten the integrity of the site. With the rainy season approaching, the project prioritizes immediate protective measures to prevent further deterioration, while laying the groundwork for longer-term conservation, including technical studies, restoration, and capacity building. #ALIPH #UNESCO #Cambodia #PreahVihear #WorldHeritage #CulturalHeritage #HeritageProtection #EmergencyResponse #BuiltHeritage 📷 ALIPH

“In Africa, when an elder dies, it is as though a library were burning.”— Amadou Hampâté Bâ (Malian writer and poet) 🇲🇱 At the heart of Africa’s cultural heritage lie handwritten manuscripts: guardians of history, knowledge, memory and identity. 🇲🇷 For AMALIA Association, celebrating African World Heritage Day today means recognising the extraordinary value of these cultural treasures, which we are safeguarding in Mali and Mauritania thanks to the support of @aliph_foundation . 🇲🇱 Every manuscript tells a story that goes far beyond its contents: it speaks through its calligraphy, decorations, leather bindings, materials and the craftsmanship that brought it to life. 🇲🇷 Protecting this heritage means preserving living traditions and passing them on to future generations. Because safeguarding a manuscript means safeguarding a part of Africa and the world’s memory. . “Manuscripts Conservation and Preservation Training in Libraries of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan” We are proud to be actively implementing the project “Manuscripts Conservation and Preservation Training in Libraries of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan”, led by STERNA Heritage. Funded by @aliph_foundation and co-funded by the European Union (@euinkazakhstan , @eudeluzb ), this initiative focuses on safeguarding the manuscript heritage of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan through specialized training in documentation and conservation. In collaboration with the Al-Biruni Institute of Oriental Studies in Tashkent and the National Library of Kazakhstan in Almaty (@ulttyq_kitapkhana ), the project addresses urgent risks affecting Islamic manuscript collections, while strengthening local conservation capacity and promoting sustainable, long-term preservation practices. Through intensive, hands-on training missions, we work closely with local professionals from different institutions, sharing knowledge and practical skills in: – preventive conservation – environmental monitoring – emergency response – remedial conservation treatments These remarkable collections, dating from the 10th to the early 20th century, include Qur’anic codices, scientific manuscripts, and literary works. Today, they face significant risks due to climate conditions, storage challenges, and limited conservation resources. We would like to share some footage from our first training session with our instructors, Nikolas Sarris (@niks4rr ) and Nil Baydar (@nil_baydar ), at the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which has just come to a close. It has been such an inspiring experience to collaborate, exchange knowledge, and contribute to the long-term safeguarding of such invaluable cultural heritage. We look forward to continuing this important work in the next session. #Kazakhstan #Uzbekistan #CulturalHeritage #ManuscriptConservation #STERNAHeritage

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐨’𝐬 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 Restoration work is now underway at the historic charitable tuberculosis clinic in the Old City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Ottoman-era courtyard building damaged by conflict, the 2023 earthquake, and looting is being rehabilitated by @turquoisemountain in partnership with the Friends of the Old City of Aleppo, including the repair of roofs, walls, and traditional wooden structures. Beyond restoring a significant heritage site, the initiative will revive traditional craftsmanship and support local artisans through training in stone carving, plasterwork, and woodwork. Once completed, the building will be returned to the Syrian Society for the Control of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases in Aleppo, where it will once again serve as a charitable clinic, contributing to supporting community health and revitalizing the historic Al-Aqaba neighborhood. A project where heritage protection and social impact go hand in hand. The projects supported by ALIPH in Syria are carried out in collaboration with the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM). #ALIPH #Aleppo #CulturalHeritage #HeritageProtection #Syria #BuiltHeritage #CommunityImpact #TraditionalCraftsmanship #WorldHeritage #HealthAndHeritage 📷 @turquoisemountain
