When I Was a Mother & Other Songs is a collection of songs spanning the last handful of years of my life. I think of this period of time as the inhale before the exhale of my daughter’s arrival. It was a time of limbo, of searching and wandering toward something I wanted deeply. I began releasing these songs one by one in 2023, originally considering them individual messages and moments. But as I looked back I began to feel their connectedness and how each one represents some aspect of this chapter of my life. The writing of these songs spanned from the early days of the pandemic (A Woman Needs The Words) through my Grandmama’s passing and remembering her life, through the longing, hope, heartbreak, and vulnerability of infertility and miscarriage, to claiming the joy of sitting on my friend Joe Pisapia’s couch in his studio, many months pregnant with my daughter, and writing the jubilant Mortal Heaven.
I am humbled and in awe of the incredible musicians who brought these songs to life. Thank you all from my whole heart for your brilliant contributions.
A huge thank you to @joepisapia for for giving so much attention, care and time to these songs. And I will spend the rest of my days on this earth thanking @dickthegentleman for his generous dedication to making each of these songs the best version of themselves. Thank you for your patience, all the many hours, listening on every possible speaker, and encouraging me endlessly.
Working on some spring + summer shows and feeling PUMPED to get back out there! 💪🏽
This was my last full-band show (not including Christmas!). I was about 15 weeks pregnant with Miss H. Lou 💘 I remember learning that she could hear around that point and thinking it was so cool that she was listening to us.
Love playing @3rdandlindsley …and that band 😮💨 🔥 💨 🌟 🍀

Wow, I love him. I could post 100 pictures of him looking cute sitting at a table, or snuggling with our dog, or cheek to cheek with our daughter, or riding atop a zero turn lawnmower, or saying/doing something that makes me laugh, but I’ll leave it here. To know him is to love him and a lot of folks love him. Myself included. Happy birthday @dickthegentleman we love you!
The strength, fortitude, joy, creativity, and unbounded, unending love of a Mother’s heart is what makes the world go round. Happy Mothers Day, to my incredible mom and all of the mamas I am blessed to know and love.
Last night’s Slow Flow with musical magic by @joepisapia and @dickthegentleman was even more dreamy and delicious than I anticipated. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to join us and to @holayogastudio for hosting ♥️
Just gotta put this straight onto the grid cause I don’t know how else to handle the cuteness of Hennie Lou, @nickibluhm and the “neighs” (Cosmo and Omega). Thanks for such a joy-filled morning, Auntie Nick 😘
Impossible to sum up the growth, discoveries, joy, dancing-while-eating, sweetness and love that transpired in this past year of Hennie Lou’s life, but here’s four minutes of my best attempt at representing it. Hennie proudly says now, “I’m two!”—she has doubled her age in just one year. I’m astounded by her on a daily basis and so SO lucky to be her mom.
Sharing a new one in honor of my baby girl turning two years old. I started this song shortly before she was born, and it finally feels finished.
Springtime and the world is new
In the backseat looking down at you
Cherry trees and redbuds along the road
When we bring you home
Windows down to catch the breeze
Oh never have you felt such a thing
Favorite songs playing on the stereo
When we bring you home
Home where we have waited
Home filling up these spaces
For years to come
My only one
Home
Your dad will hold you in his arms
And show you all around the yard
Someday we’ll mark the wall for every inch you grow
Today we’ll hold you close
And when we all lay down to rest
Your little head, safe against my chest
Right where you belong may you always know
Honey, you are home
It’s my best friend’s big FOUR OH and I couldn’t be luckier than to be living hand in hand with this bright shining star. All hail the outrageously funny, kind, talented, wise and witty @kristinfidd 🩷🩷🩷 can’t imagine life without you, Doc. So I just won’t do it.
