This is William Ellis - a renovation and extension to a striking mid-century modernist house in Burwood.
Originally built in 1950 for renowned Melbourne cartoonist William Ellis Green (WEG), the house carries a strong design legacy. But an ill-considered subdivision left it compromised, and plans to extend for a growing family were soon complicated by a newly introduced heritage overlay.
Working closely with Whitehorse Council and a great team of collaborators, we found a way forward - carefully massaging the guidelines, working with the existing structure, and leaning into the quirks that make the house what it is.
What could have been a constraint became the project’s greatest strength.
We’re proud to now share the story of that journey.
