My dad painted this in 1984 when he was probably 21. He hates it and is mortified that I have it hanging in my apartment (and honestly I know why he hates it). It used to hang in my grandmas house. I love it.

My grandma departed this world about two months ago now. It’s been a strange feeling to lose your last grandparent, the one you had the most interaction with, and even then there was always a discordance to our connection. I always felt like as two Leo’s, we had a hard time accepting defeat from one another. I always felt combative and headstrong to her opinions and was stubborn to allow her to be her age. I grieve a connection I wish I had with my grandma, but I also grieve the connection I did have. As we are constantly reminded, we are mirrors. The things that so frustrated me in her, are the things I’m often frustrated with in myself. And when transmuted, they’re also the things I most admire. I pray that she’s in peace somewhere, that her fire, which blazed hot and bright, have cooled to embers, which have turned to ashes, to nourish something new in its place. I love you, Sue.
