Lots of surprises in the pairs short program at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics. Germans Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin, the world silver medalists, lead the 16 teams qualified for the free program on Feb. 16. They were among the few couples who skated clean programs. In their anxiously anticipated return, Canadians Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, had two falls and ended up in 14th. Stellato-Dudek, who at 42 is the oldest woman skater competing at the Olympics in nearly a century, injured her head during training the last week of January, and had to skip the team event but was cleared to compete in the pairs competition but fell coming out of a lift. And perhaps the biggest shakeup involves the world champions from Japan, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara, who also struggled with a lift and sit in 5th. Americans Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea and Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howe skated strong programs and are 7th and 9th, respectively, heading into the free program. 📷 WANG Zhao / AFP via Getty Images Gabriel Bouys / AFP via Getty Images Elsa/Getty Images Gabriel Bouys / AFP via Getty Images Matthew Stockman/Getty Images

Quad god Ilia Malinin leads after the short program, and his teammates Andrew Torgashev and Maxim Naumov also had the skates of their lives. I sat with Naumov’s friends as they watched his Olympic debut, skating in memory and in honor of his parents and coaches, who were killed in a plane crash just over a year ago. Read more on time.com

What would figure skating be w/out a little controversy. Apparently the surface of the podium stand for the team event at the Milano Cortina Olympics was not kind to the blades on the athletes' skates. In an effort to keep the podium safe while the athletes stood on it with skates, the organizers used an anti-slip surface, which was more abrasive than anticipated, according to the AP. Skaters, including US ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates, could be seen wiping their blades on the carpet surrounding the podium after stepping down. The Milano Cortina Organizing Committee apologized for the mishap, promised to address the problem and made blade sharpening services and a training session available for the medalists. Most skaters sharpen their blades days or weeks before competing, but not close to events, b/c it makes them grippier and less controllable, and takes time to work in. But the ice dancers and men's skaters had to compete on freshly sharpened blades. Chock and Bates said theirs were fine the following day for the rhythm dance portion of their competition, and Malinin said he had had his blades sharpened as well before his short program event. The Japanese federation has filed a formal complaint about the podium surface. 📸 : Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images

At @milanocortina2026 men's figure skating starts today, with @ilia_quadg0d_malinin taking center stage in the short program. Malinin has already skated twice on Olympic ice, clinching the gold for @teamusa in the team event and says he now has a good feel for the ice and the atmosphere in the arena for his highly anticipated event. Joining him will be @maximnaumov_ who, like Malinin, is making his Olympic debut, just over a year after his parents and coaches died in a plane crash. And look for @andrewtorg who rounds out the first-time Olympian men's squad. The action starts 6:30pm in Milan (12:30pmET) #milanocortina2026 #olympics #figureskating 📷 Jamie Squire/Getty Images Matthew Stockman/Getty Images (2)

Spoiler alert— @ilia_quadg0d_malinin made his Olympic debut and it wasn’t quite what the world expected. In the men’s short program segment of the team event Malinin lost his streak of undefeated competitions that began in 2023. Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama outscored Malinin by just over 10 points. Malinin opted not to do the quad axel and lost points on his jump combo since his quad lutz was under rotated. He wasn’t worried though, saying it was part of his plan to conserve his energy for the number of programs he has to perform over the next six days. “It wasn’t the perfect, ideal skate that I would have wanted to have but I presumed to come into this team competition with only 50% of my full potential so that’s what I felt here today. It’s the way I pace myself.” Still, the U.S. remains ahead of Japan in the team event— by one point— going into the last portion of the competition where women, men, pairs and ice dancers will compete in the free, or long program. Every point counts.
