Ok ok ok ok vulnerable post- this is from last year when (we all weren’t maybe sick of hearing this song!!!!) it’s a GREAT belt technique practise song tho!!!! So if I’m doing ‘self practise’ this is pretty much what I’ll do! Record myself over and over… and over…. And over again. Yeh it’s obsessive. But it’s funny, even almost a year after the fact I can still hear the EXACT thoughts running through my head as I coach myself through this. So many micro-thoughts need to happen to make big sings like this possible, I don’t think I fully appreciated that until now. (Because I had to make all those captions, which took way longer than I thought it would!!!) I don’t much like posting this, because to me; it is not perfect. But I also think it’s important to reflect a true representation of the work it takes, the time, the self critique (hopefully in a healthy way) and effort that goes into making a GREAT instrument. For now, please enjoy my process, and reading what is going through my head, as I work to always improve- even as a working singer and teacher- it truly never stops!!!! Xoxoxoxo

AYOOOOOOOOOO I like a smart on-voice-MT-belt as much as the next person but more than that; I love love love loveeeeeeee singing in this style. She’s got a little neutral false fold action, she’s got a high(er) larynx, soft onsets, she got those real amuuuuurican vowel shapes, she’s playing with that straight tone (what did I miss?!!!) anyway I love her. Anything Ms Lizzy McAlpine ever does feels like a vocal ease to sing, and the beauty is in the ✨subtlety✨ and I think that’s magic. This SONG is magic to me.

This is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written. This is from a record Tom and I made back in 2022 that still hasn’t seen the light of day but who knows! Maybe one day we’ll get it together and put the full songs out somewhere! For now, here’s a little bit of “you don’t say”, that I wrote after reading Normal People and then swiftly diverged into writing my silly little comedy songs for TikTok cause I got sick of the ballads lolol.

I started singing Jazz when I was 13, it was the first genre I ever really tried and naturally, fell totally in love. I was recently reminded of this song and simply HAD to re-do it because I love it and especially Jane Monheit so damn much. I’m always so HAPPY when students come to me saying they want to try Jazz because truly, this is the genre that builds artists and musicians, and always has been. Nothing will improve your rhythm, pitch, intonation, style, phrasing, breathing and artistry like Jazz will. Nothing will make you feel equal parts out of your depth and better than you have ever been, like Jazz will. If you ever want a challenge, or just want to improve in all areas, pick yourself a jazz song!!!!!! Forever grateful that my first singing teacher Julie Wilson introduced me to something that has had my heart ever since.

Singing for Romance Was Born at AFW24. Music for the entire show was composed, produced, engineered and mixed by @tyoow.music the queen of the multi-hyphenate. She WROTE them, she RECORDED them, she PRODUCED them and then she mixed the finished product to fit the cavernous space of the show. She took a brief and created a mood to elevate the entire show and if you’re lucky maybe she’ll release all the tracks for you to hear because they are all equally exquisite and brilliant. Singing to fit a brief is my favourite thing, mesh let me know what style and mood she wanted and I adjusted my sound around that. She let me warble on some improvisations for a while, then gave me a clear melody she wanted to end the piece (cut to me saying “that’s a very mesh interval, I have to get that one right.”) She knew what she wanted and as someone singing on the session that is SO divine. Anyone who gets to work with mesh in a studio can count themselves as very lucky indeed, direction and clarity of concept like no other. Her creative vision and execution has always been and will always be, immaculate. Also the way she mixes vocals is my favourite. The entire show was simply beyond, I’m so happy to have played a small part in her stunning and masterful (in the truest sense of the word) work.

Ok I call this a “vocal hygiene” song. It’s one of those songs where you have to use EVERYTHING. Legit-y sop, speech quality, mix, twang, belt, speak singing and transition seamlessly between all of them. If I’m checking in with myself (which you should be doing, and have your go-to songs or warmups where you can do it!) I use this song!! I’m watching for the transitions between vocals registers and vocal placements especially and HONESTLY… the placement of some parts of this was OFF!!! I would change it!!! But whatever this was one take, and in an audition room, you only get one take!!!! Whenever I’m going hard self coaching I use this mic, not a phone or camera audio, why? You can’t hide ANYTHING in a condenser mic, but that’s just a lil extra challenge I like to throw at myself. Either way, I strongly encourage you in practise sessions to film and watch back, uncomfy? Yes for sure. Invaluable? Yes absolutely, it will be a game changer for you!!!!!! Go do it!!!!!!!!
