In early January 2017, Frederik Duerinck —a documentary filmmaker turned artist-technologist— was commissioned to create in collaboration with IFF (and under the guidance of their project lead Anahita Mekanik) an extraordinary exhibition exploring the future of olfactive experiences.
Having crafted several multi-sensory art installations, he’d already dabbled in scent and scent design, captivated by its intimate, visceral impact on the human experience.
During a workshop with scientists and perfumers, inspiration struck: what if he could built a machine that let people play with and craft their own scents?
After months of relentless nights in a New York workspace, ‘Algorithmic Beauty’ emerged as a standout work in the Avant Garden exhibition.
The concept was alive, a prototype in hand, but Frederik didn’t want his creation confined to museums as speculative design—he wanted it to break free, really democratizing perfume and scent design for all.
To make that vision real, he estimated needing at least 2.5 million dollars to develop the technology. But he knew no art fund would ever bankroll such an audacious ordeal…
Algorithmic Perfumery needed to become a start up: developing & growing to sustain itself. To not only be a commentary on the industry but really affect change in how every human can interact with scent.

Created by Every Human this unique realization sits at the crossroads of art, science and technology.
It was born in 2017 out of the encounter between artist-technologist Frederik Duerinck and scent designer Anahita Mekanik.
Together, they aim to offer a new way to interact with scent by placing users at the heart of the creation process.
This shift in perspective radically challenges the current model offered to consumers and questions why 800 people decide how the world smells for 8 billion humans.
Algorithmic Perfumery is in residency at Atelier Jolie from May 13 to June 7. Come create your own perfume. If you are not in NYC, come join the community by creating online. The samples will be mailed to you.
