On this National Love a Tree Day, we want to share with you the story of a modern-day giant. 🌲 At Post 3 on the Big Pines Trail stands the largest White pine along the trail, a tree that has survived incredible odds for more than two centuries. Its story began in 1790, when a forest fire cleared away leaf litter and opened just enough space for White pine seeds to germinate before other trees could take over. Nearly 100 years later, the pine narrowly escaped being cut during nearby logging operations because it was small for its age, stunted by the shade from taller trees. Ironically, the removal of those surrounding trees gave it the sunlight and space needed for a major growth spurt. Then, in 1928, another fire swept through the area. By then, the pine had grown large enough to survive the flames, and with even more competition removed, it shot upward once again, finally breaking above the canopy. Today, this 236-year-old giant stands an incredible 49 meters tall with a diameter of 1.24 meters. With all it has survived, we think it’s the perfect tree to pause beside and reflect on all the things that had to go right for it to still be here today and for us to be here to appreciate it. What’s your favourite tree in Algonquin Park?

After that long winter, we are loving looking out at our lakes and seeing *water* and not *ice* Bring on the paddling, boating, fishing, and (eventually) swimming! ⚠️ Although our lakes are now 'ice-free', they are still 'ice-cold' and submersion in the water could quickly become a life-threatening situation this time of year.

Fishing trout in Algonquin Provincial Park this spring? Consider fishing lead free! Did you know that a single lost sinker or jig contains enough lead to kill a Common Loon or other waterbird? Instead of lead, choose alternatives that are readily available – such as bismuth, clay, steel, tungsten, or tin. Help protect our lakes and wildlife while enjoying the outdoors. A few other points to remember: -This year, Algonquin Park opened for trout fishing on Saturday, April 25th. -Review the rules and regulations: https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario-fishing-regulations-summary/fisheries-management-zone-15 (link in bio) -No live baitfish is allowed to be used or possessed within Algonquin Park. Stay safe and good luck!

Spring is moving along here in Algonquin as the grasp of winter weakens. With the last of the snow melting away and the slow opening of lakes, other signs of spring begin to appear. . Beavers begin repairs on dams and lodges after a long winter, early spring birds like the Red-tailed Hawk and Swamp Sparrow return to the parks' wetlands and forests, and Moose enjoy the salty puddles along the highway after months of eating tree buds. During this time of year, the park takes on a neutral colour palate of dark greens of the spruces and pines and endless shades of browns of the hardwoods. . As the days go by, spring progresses faster and faster, and it won't be long until the first spring flowers emerge, the trees begin to leaf out, and the woods are filled with songs of colorful birds.
