Algoma University Visual Arts is sharing a diverse collection of artwork at the Sault Area Hospital’s Algoma District Cancer Program through the course Special Topics in Public Art: Art for Healing. This Fall 2025, professor Katie Huckson and seven students created and curated a body of work for the ADCP waiting areas and hallways with the goal of enhancing the space with calming, healing, and engaging visual experiences. Local artists and Algoma University Visual Arts alumni also contributed works to the project. Follow along as we highlight our student’s work, contributing local artists, and images of the transformed space. To read the full story click the link in our bio.

The Anji Inaashkwun team, in collaboration with the Algoma University Visual Arts Department, invites Algoma University students—priority for FNMI students—to our workshop on April 30th at the new Visual Arts Studio (1416 Wellington St E). Art supplies and refreshments will be provided. This workshop offers an opportunity to explore your relationship with water. Join us for a creative mapping activity where you’ll draw your own “subjective atlas” — a personal map shaped by your memories, emotions, and experiences of place. All skill levels welcome; just bring your unique perspective. Annie King will be joining us to discuss her work and to help guide our session with insightful suggestions and feedback. Annie King is a contemporary nature-informed multi-media artist. Through sensorial material exploration, her work evokes elemental and immersive aspects of nature, exploring ideas of loss and environmental awareness and the eternal struggle between resilience and fragility. She has a BFA from Algoma University and an MFA from the University of Alberta and is a part-time faculty member with the Algoma University Fine Art Department. D’Lyla Maureen’s All 14 Crane Species Dance is one of several thesis exhibitions presented by Algoma University Visual Arts students at the Art Gallery of Algoma. Through screenprinting, painting, and installation, her work reflects the depth of research and creative development fostered within the program 👩🏻‍🎨 At Algoma University, Visual Arts students learn through hands-on practice, engagement with the land, and a strong connection to community—culminating in the opportunity to present their work in a professional gallery setting before graduating.
