Tech meets community in Brampton.
Algoma U’s CivicTechBrampton series brought students, professionals, and community members together to explore how technology can drive real world impact, from AI to open data and beyond.
Led by Dr. Ushnish Sengupta, Assistant Professor in the Community, Economic and Social Development (CESD) program, the series turned ideas into action through hands on learning and meaningful connections.
May 5 marks Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+).
This day honours the lives of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people who have been lost to violence, while raising awareness of the ongoing impacts of colonialism, systemic inequities, and gender-based violence experienced by Indigenous communities.
Red dresses, inspired by Jaime Black and her REDress Project, hang in public spaces as powerful symbols of loss and remembrance. They call on all of us to reflect, learn, and take meaningful steps toward awareness, accountability, and collective care.
At Algoma University, we recognize the importance of this day and reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation and justice. We invite the AU community to join us on May 5 at our Sault Ste. Marie and Brampton campuses for events in partnership with the Anishinaabe Initiatives team and the Wellness Team, creating space for learning, reflection, and community connection.
Together, let’s honour, remember, and act.

Paws-itively grateful! 🐾 Today is National Therapy Dog Day, and we’re celebrating the furry friends who make Algoma U feel like home.
We are so lucky to have these dedicated therapy dog teams on campus on Wednesdays! 🗓️ Whether it’s a quick snuggle between classes or a moment of calm during a busy week, their monthly visits bring so much comfort and connection to our students and staff.
To the incredible dogs and handlers who generously share their time and wagging tails with the Thunderbird community: Thank you!

It was so fun meeting our future scientists!
Last Saturday, our Biology and Computer Science departments had an incredible time teaming up for the @ssmscifest , hosted by @sciencenorth at the @bushplanemuseum1989 .
Our professors and graduate students spent the day diving into the wonders of the natural and digital worlds with so many curious families. Huge thanks to Science North for having us this past weekend, and to everyone who stopped by to explore, learn, and ask such amazing questions!

We were proud to host international recruitment agents as part of the CPF FAM Tour at the Algoma University Brampton Campus. 🌍
Today we welcomed agents from across Asia and Latin America for a day of presentations, campus tours, and student-focused experiences. Guests learned more about Algoma U, our diverse programs, and the student services that support success.
A highlight of the day was connecting agents with student ambassadors, who shared their personal journeys and experiences firsthand. The visit also included a fun Kahoot game, gifts for our winners, and hands-on VR experiences showcasing immersive technology.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day engaging and memorable. We look forward to continuing to build meaningful connections together. ✨

Two days on the land, learning in a good way.
We were honoured to facilitate this land-based leadership intensive with students from Algoma University’s Queen Elizabeth Scholars program at the St. Kateri Outdoor Learning Centre.
Over those two days on the land, students gathered for reflection, connection, community building, and meaningful conversations grounded in relationship, responsibility, and growth.
From time on the land to shared meals and evening fire talks, this experience created space for learning, leadership, and community in a meaningful way.
This work is at the heart of what we do at Thrive Tours.
Miigwetch to everyone who shared in this experience with us.

Inspiring the next generation of scientists! 🧪🔬
We were thrilled to open our Biology lab doors to the Grade 6 and 7 students from Anna McRea Public School as part of the @sciencenorth Science Festival and @nordik_institute Conservation Authority Project. Led by Dr. Elaine Ho-Tassone (Algoma U Part-time Professor and NORDIK Director of Operations) and our dedicated Biology students, these young researchers donned lab coats to get a “bug’s-eye view” of local water critters under the microscope.
Algoma U is committed to building talent and capacity that will empower the future of Northern Ontario. 🌲✨
