As the son of a Cambodian immigrant who fled a genocidal regime, only to have her children live under an authoritarian one in-the-making, stories like ICE's detainment of Nong Phimmoungkhoun - whose Laos food truck, Khao Niew, is permanently closed following his detainment - hit close to home.
Phimmoungkhoun, a family man who feeds and provides the community with Laotian staples such as sticky rice and papaya salad, is painted as a criminal worthy of detainment and deportation in the eyes of a modern-day gestapo headed by a snake oil salesman-turned-president with 34 felonies attached to his name (which are possibly the 34 least egregious acts committed by this orangutan-hued charlatan).
