➡️ Some thoughts on photo credit
I started taking photos at concerts when I was in college in North Carolina. I loved going to shows and the opportunity to capture artists lost in doing what they love most. When I moved to New York, I was unable to get my camera into shows without a press pass and had no contacts in publicity. I got my first press pass from reaching out directly to Sleigh Bells and got the opportunity to shoot their show with M.I.A. as the headliner. She spit into the photo pit right into my camera and I got some great photos. My buddy @freshbread contributed to Brooklyn Vegan and he was nice enough to connect me to the guy who ran the site. The story went viral and even Perez Hilton picked up the gossip. Everywhere those photos went, my name was attached and I got interest from a number of photo editors to shoot future concerts. This started my career as a professional photographer. I share this to emphasize the importance of photo credit. A lot of times, it’s the only currency photographers have. Each instance is opportunity towards future work and building one’s portfolio. There’s many times throughout a photographer’s career where simply getting credit for your work is viewed as the payment. When that’s omitted, countless opportunities disappear along with it.
My grandfather, US Army Staff Sergeant David Baldwin, wrote this letter to his oldest brother, USMC Major Frank Baldwin, during the Battle of the Bulge on Christmas Eve, 1944. Dave was 23 at the time and spent World War II fighting in the Army through Europe while Frank was a Marine Ace pilot fighting in the Pacific. The two grew up on a farm in Lapeer, Michigan in a family of ten children and went off to far flung areas of the world to carry out their duties. My grandfather was a humble man and never elaborated on his service until 50 years after the fact, sharing with my dad that he’d fought through D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and aided in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. I’m proud to keep his memory alive in sharing this story every year.
I first learned about Brunch from the Simpsons quote “it’s not quite breakfast, it’s not quite lunch, but it comes with a slice of cantaloupe at the end. You don’t get completely what you would at breakfast, but you get a good meal.” Anyways, here’s @haroldmoore ’s excellent brunch at @cafecommercenyc
This summer, I got to see a lifelong dream realized. I finally shot a photo that wound up on billboard in Manhattan and it remained graffiti-free long enough for me to pay it a visit.

I’ve been a regular since I first visited in the summer of 2009, and honored to have been taking photos since 2017. Congrats to @k__mech , Jud, and @lauraxpalmer for keeping the most perfect place in Greenpoint going strong. Here’s some of my favorite shots from throughout the years.
A little over 10 years ago, I had the opportunity to join @BFA as the first-ever social media director and work with some of the most brilliant and creative people who have shaped my career and life in general. It was an honor to celebrate the agency’s 15th anniversary last night with @stephanieketty putting together the perfect event, as always.
