So many people have things to say right now, and also it's an important time for listening. So thanks for listening to me run my stammering mouth on your show this afternoon, @paulculliver .
Half of America is grieving, and I know many Australians/global citizens are upset and scared too. Personally, I'm trying not to lose the plot like I did in 2016. But y'all we MUST find a way to work together moving forward. Every single one of us has capacity for both tremendous evil and marvelous grace. Things don't have to get worse.
If you live in Newcastle and have strong feelings about tonight's election, (good or bad) consider getting involved with @commongroundnewcastle . Sorry to plug my little thing on election night, but it seems v relevant. Please, don't give up on humanity.
My grandparents were Kentucky farmers. My mother is an English professor, my father, an engineer.
Lately I have been thinking about work. How we do it, what it means. Part of me worships the idea of simple, honest work, with your hands. At the same time I have occasionally struggled feeling like some work is "beneath me." I don't like that I have these thoughts; it makes me question my character.
Then again, like my colleague at the wedding (21), sometimes I feel like no one should ever have to work! If we still lived in hunter gather times we would only spend 15-20 hours PER WEEK, foraging for food. I guess we'd spend the rest of our time singing songs, making love and building sandcastles.
Also I didn't even go into unpaid physical labor, which happens across the world, although some forms are more accepted than others. (EG stay-at-home parent vs enslaved children).
PS Josh says these aren't really poems, so I say they are THOEMS! Half thoughts half poems.
Identity, flags, train and tram rides, Americanism, imperialism, horns, climate change, courtyards, southern art, Sazeracs, getting lucky, being golden and why I'm obsessed with New Orleans forever...
My last three Substacks are called:
"Leaving is a magic trick"
"Good Old New Orleans"
and
"Golden American Girl"
Thank you to the wonderful, tolerant folks who kindly subscribe to me waxing lyrical in your inbox every Monday. I don't know where I'm going but I love the ride. alexmorriswrite.substack.com

"You won't find no answers safe at home
You can't learn heartbreak from a poem
And every hard time, song rhyme, friend you've got
You'll have, with Heaven on top" - Zach Bryan
Love y'all forever @latierrallena@iveykaiser@ellekays ! Thanks for meeting me in NOLA and Nashville. I'm the luckiest gal alive. #HeavenOnTop #Girlfriends ššš
This latest episode of Hey Soul Sista discussed a tragic loss in our own community here in Newcastle which has sparked a range of opinions and outlooks that are part of a larger (global) conversation...
Are we becoming safer⦠or slowly giving away our freedom?
In this episode of Hey Soul Sista, Iām joined by Alex Morris ā writer and social commentator ā and together we explore the tension so many of us are feeling right now:
- safety vs freedom
- fear vs trust
- protection vs control
This isnāt about being right or wrong.
Itās about pausingā¦ļæ½thinkingā¦ļæ½and asking ourselves what kind of world we want to live in.
Iād truly love to hear what comes up for you as you listen.
Do you feel safer with more surveillance⦠or less free?

In today's Newcastle Herald you can read about my three days of glory at Jazz Fest last weekend! The festival runs for two weekends, but this weekend in Nola it's pouring down rain, so the press pass gods shone down upon me. Also here are some fast videos and photos including Ani Difranco, Joy Clark (they performed together too!) Jon Batiste, David Byrne, Louis Michot, Wendell Brunious, gospel goodness and plenty more like "porch fest" and riding the street cars home at the end of the day. (I LOVEEE)
The biggest highlight was my dear friend Laura flying in to join me for the final hours of Fest Sunday! āļøššÆšŗšš

"Tell you the truth I prefer the worst of you... Too bad you had to have a better half." - @anidifranco at @jazzfest , who I haven't seen since the @the_orange_peel in Asheville when Obama was still in office.
I spent my formative years listening to Ani, and it was an absolute pleasure to hear her again and to be in the crowd with other longtime fans.
