📷 from "Infinite Frequencies" by Alex Jacobs-Blum (2024) 'Woven from Gayogo̱hó:nǫʼ (Cayuga) and German lineages, my identity opens space for reflection on belonging and enduring connections to the land. My practice becomes a sacred gateway, offering space to reclaim my Indigeneity with an emphasis on the land that has sustained my Hodinöhsö:ni’ lineage across generations. It is a journey that leads me to (re)discover and honour the ancestral knowledge preserved within the land that lives in recesses of my memory.' Alex Jacobs-Blum (she/her) is a Gayogo̱hó:nǫʼ (Cayuga) and German visual artist and independent curator living in Hamilton, ON. Her research focuses on Indigenous futurities and accessing embodied Ancestral Hodinöhsö:ni' knowledge. The core of her practice and methodology is a strong foundation in community building, fostering relationships, empowering youth, and Indigenizing institutional spaces. Her creative process is rooted in storytelling and challenging hierarchical power structures. Alex seeks to facilitate transformative change infused with love and care. Alex received a Bachelor of Photography at Sheridan College in 2015, where she was awarded the Canon Award of Excellence for Narrative Photography. #latergram from Toronto visit: deeply thoughtful exhibition curated by @mxmigwans at @artmuseumuoft ✨✨✨ “Earthwork critically reassesses the art historical framings of “earthwork” popularized by the Minimalist and Land Art movements of the 1960s and 1970s, reclaiming the term through an Indigenous lens. The exhibition re-imagines what it means to work with and for Earth, building on ancestral and contemporary practices of repair and resilience toward possible futures. Like the term “beadwork,” earthwork refers to a way of working rather than the making of singular objects. With a Canada-wide scope emphasizing the Great Lakes region, Earthwork takes as its starting point an understanding of ancestral earthworks less as monuments than as sites of ongoing stewardship and care. It considers multiple layers of engagement with the land, including a history of land defense movements, the cultivation of plants, and ancestral practices of prescribed burns alongside contemporary artworks as creative acts of relational intervention.“

A couple of weeks ago we spent two days full of reflection, connection and community during the Full Moon Ceremony and Communal Feast at Hart House Farm with our 2024-25 Farm artist-in-residence Alex Jacobs-Blum (@alexjacobsblum ). During this culminating event of the residency, participants also got to join a guided hike, a talk by the Farm’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence, Don Russel (@donrussellart ) and a presentation of a new book Alex created as part of the residency in collaboration with our placement student Nathan A. Reswara (@nathn.ar ). The first day ended with the Full Moon Ceremony that was led by Indigenous Elder and Knowledge Keeper Valerie King. We would like to thank Alex, Don and Val for sharing their practice with us and creating space for connection and learning! Missed the event at the farm? You can still read more about Alex and her work at the link in our bio. Photo credit: Nathan A. Reswara (@nathn.ar ) #HartHouseFarm #FarmResidency #HartHouse #UofT

I’m so excited to finally announce the first edition of the Photo E(a)st Festival taking place throughout the month of April in Moncton & Sackville with an opening week conference next week! This has been an incredibly collaborative effort that would not be possible without the help of a ton of dedicated people but I want to give a special shout out to co-organizers @kstent @matt_horseman @anniefrancenoel and great friends of the festival @theothercat @lbutetroch @sheddyschmidt @niskimbeault and many others! This has been a huge dream of mine since the first time (of many) that I ever heard someone say “there are no photographers on the east coast.” That is simply untrue and we are here to say loudly and proudly that we have some of the most talented photographers and lens-based artists in the country. We will announce a rough schedule soon and then a detailed one with specific talks and workshops by the end of this week. Hope to see you there!
