State of Emergency

It was great to have designed this month’s cover of The New Statesman, guest edited by @gretathunberg around the publication of her new title: The Climate Book.

Watching Gullah Gullah Island was such a core memory — one of the few shows that truly reflected experiences that felt relatable. We loved it so much, my mum used to call my cousin Binyah Binyah after the cute, lively, loveable frog! It creatively taught us about language, culture, and connection. Now that I’m more drawn to African-rooted languages born from resilience, I’m even more grateful for it.
So when @guardian asked me to design for this powerful piece by Dr Zakiya Makenzie, I had to say yes — even with just one day to do it. Deadline adrenaline is real!
I cannot begin to describe what an honour it is to have worked on this cover for the incredible @janellemonae for her book #TheMemoryLibrarian
So grateful to call this my life and to be able to contribute to the growth of artists that I look up to. Thank you so much @harpercollins and @studiopi_uk for trusting me with this one.

Cover design for my friend ebenezar joachim who writes the most incredible utopian African queer fiction and lives in my imagination 🤭
Thank you for all the work you do ebenezar. I’m honoured that I get to work with you 🫶🏾
Collage studies.
I’ve been drawing and painting a lot more recently (sharing most of these on tik tok because instagram is weird). I haven’t been feeling very inspired to make collage work. Something about AI and all the craziness of the world right now just makes making physical art much more important/fun.
This being said, I decided to stay in the digital a bit more yesterday to see if anything would emerge and this did. I’m happy with how it turned out and I enjoy how it feels like a paper collage while still having those sharp digital lines. I feel like my style is changing and instead of resisting, I’m openly going with the flow. Very curious about how artists deal with changing styles, is there resistance or do you all just accept it as part of the process?
Dambe lI
This is my second work from this series.
I made this collage from images I took in 2021 during my first encounter with Nigerian martial arts called Dambe. I was struck by the simultaneous softness and strength these men displayed.
They held each other with care, even when the stakes were palpable.
There is an intimacy in the ritual, in the preparation, in the watching, in the aftermath.
Each time I return to the footage, I discover something new. A glance. A gesture. An electric pause.
