A story about a belated birthday gift for my youngest daughter, who radiates pure love and has shown me endless patience. For my four kids, I have made a point to gift them a one-on-one surprise out-of-town adventures for their birthday, from being on the court of an NBA game, driving a Lamborghini on a racetrack, to feeding the dream of attending an Ivy League school. Being on a solo parent budget, I’ve had to be financially creative to make these experiences happen. Hands down, they’re the best gifts. The birthday adventure for my youngest daughter was postponed for several years, swept aside by the chaos that took over our lives. Many things were delayed, and her final year and a half of high school was a bust given the upheaval we faced and the rocky transition out of the Covid curriculum.
Parenting can be brutally challenging, especially when you’re torn between a career, the shitty new job you didn’t apply for of fixing destruction, and constantly trying to soothe your nervous system from imploding. I carry a heavy guilt for what True missed out on during those years—my time. Yet she never once complained, never voiced disappointment, and never used it against me. Like I said, she is pure love. She is the confidante everyone in the family turns to, the one who listens, the one who offers compassion and acceptance to all, including me.
Billie Eilish is our shared language. The first time I heard her was with True, it was an instant “who is this… wow”. Her music became our connection. Bring on the gifts of Billie clothing and vinyl, with me hoping the records would linger in the living room for my listening pleasure. This October, after playing her latest album repeatedly for months and being moved by her generous philanthropy, it hit me (good pun) I had to take
@true.0.blue to see
@billieeilish live. I hustled to pull a plan together for any of the remaining sold out shows. Mid November, five-months after True’s birthday, we flew to Phoenix for this surprise and she had no idea why we were going, until the Uber driver gave it away on the way to the concert (duh).
It was True’s adventure time. It was incredible. It was healing. It filled my heart ♥️
