Modesto’s best kept (internationally known) secret ? We have great whole grain sourdough made in a little 1920’s house on the edge of downtown. Seeya noon to six for this decade old idea where we have bread on Thursdays ❤️👌🏻

You can take a whole loaf of bread, put your library book in your bag, toss that woven blanket in your basket, and get in your car, drive away from town and stop by the roadside fruit stand and grab $5 of apricots and maybe some blackberries too. You can go down to the river and spread your blanket under a tree and just immerse your brain in beautiful prose while ripping off hunks of bread. When you start to feel your skin getting too warm, you can shove fruit in your mouth and skip into the cold currents and wash your berry stained fingers and look at cool rocks until you are goosebumpy. You can do this a whole bunch. I recommend going by La Perla and getting a giant burrito on your way home at the end of the day, but thats just how I’d go about it. Loave ya.

Ripping open a fresh baguette on a Thursday afternoon might just be the six dollar pleasure that gives you a little spark of joy you’ve been missin’. Seeya next week.

Baguettes have been flying out the door in bundles of 4-6 lately. We’ll have to make more! I like lots of dijon mustard, a little proscuitto and a little brie, and a bit of fig jam on a meltingly hot day. Eat under a tree if you can! See you any given Thursday.

I love what I do, how I do it, and who I do it for. There’s no satisfaction in life quite like going to sleep worn out, knowing you did a good thing, for good people, to the best of your abilities. My conditions for contentment these days are relatively few, and this keeps my hands and conscience squeaky clean. Some of us don’t really have to lie, cheat, exploit, brainwash, pollute, or shirk our taxes to squeak out a living. All we really want after our daily bread is a cup of good coffee, nice cheese, fresh eggs, a fistful of apricots and an occasional bottle of wine. (And to get to the doctor once in a while) I hope someday we all get what we need, and a little extra for jazz records and old paperbacks from the thrift store. Love, Bonnie

It’s Thursday, which is your bread day. Subscribers sourdough pickup from noon to six, or passers by take your chances for cookies, baguettes, and focaccia coming out hot throughout the day. It’s Thursday, it’s bread day. So it shall be.
