I’m very happy to share that I’ve been awarded a three-year working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation.
Thank you to the jury for the support and the trust, and to my friends, colleagues, and everyone who has supported me and engaged with my work along the way. It means a lot, and I feel very grateful.
The jury writes:
“Albin Werle works with game and interaction design across a broad range of media, including painting, drawing, installation, and performance. Classical role-playing motifs such as the jester’s hat, the castle window, and playing cards function as figurations that draw the viewer into Werle’s game world. The adaptable, rule-based structures of the work open up an interactive field in which the viewer, or player, becomes an active participant in both the modification of the rules and the meaning of the work. Through these interactions, he challenges our understanding of the concept of art, while also opening up a more fundamental reflection on the world beyond both game and art.
Albin Werle is awarded the three-year working grant to further develop and expand the rules of both art and game.”

For Market Art Fair 2026, @aaaanordhavn presents @albinwerle
Drawing on mystical Christian traditions and folklore, his works use play and chance as tools for reflection. Paintings and a sculptural work function as interactive systems, recalling tarot or spirit boards. A modular structure invites viewers to pose questions to a series of images, while other works draw on the Annunciation and the labyrinth as frameworks for shared, imagined journeys shaped by memory and experience.

Väderskåp (Weather Cabinet)
Gouache on wood, iron, custom built cabinet.
Väderskåp is a fortune telling mechanism, working similar to tarot cards. It's shape is inspired by old Swedish tabernacle shrines, that usually contains a sculpture of Virgin Mary, flanked by images of saints on the inside of the doors. In my sculpture, those figures have been replaced with 20 emblems, divided into four categories. The categories can be seen as winter, spring, summer and fall, or physical realm, social realm, narrative realm and spiritual realm. The 20 emblems can be moved and placed in the middle of the cabinet which consist of a rotating cube bearing labels of the cardinal directions.
To use it, you ask a question, and choose four emblems to represent possible answers. Place them on the cube. Then choose two additional emblems and place them above and below the cube. These represent different perspectives. Spin the cube and see which side faces you: this is your answer, which you can understand through the emblems above and below.
The cabinet itself was constructed by the brilliant carpenter @luke.overvad ✨
Fan fiskar (Fishing devil), 2025-2026
Oil on canvas, board, paper, etc.
I was walking home from town once, late at night. I was lost in thought, in a kind of half dreaming, half waking state, when my minds eye projected this image onto the sky above the lake I was passing. I felt as if it was the devil, floating in the air, fishing for souls below.
@albinwerle works with participation, where images are not fixed objects but tools for exchange. His works unfold through use, inviting the viewer into situations where meaning is formed through action and shared experience.
For @aaaanordhavn ’s presentation at Market Art Fair 2026, Werle presents paintings and a sculpture accompanied by instructions. Drawing on folkloric games and mystical traditions, the works function through chance and interaction, changing with each encounter.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Weathering var venligst støttet af Statens Kunstfond, 15. Juni Fonden, Region Nordjylland og Frederikshavn Kommune.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The duo exhibition Weathering explored local narratives, myths, landscapes, and experiences, taking shape as new translations of something beyond the human; a nature and a transience that are difficult to comprehend and hold onto.
In 2026, Skal Contemporary celebrates its 5th anniversary. To mark the occasion, we will look back on our projects from 2021–2025 in the coming period of time.
Weathering was kindly supported by The Danish Arts Foundation, 15. Juni Fonden, Region Nordjylland, and Frederikshavn Municipality.
