Artist Spotlight: Alberto Murillo (b. Madrid, Spain) is a self-taught painter whose practice bridges Abstract Expressionism with a contemporary, process-driven approach. Now based in New York, his work reflects a career shaped by movement across cities and disciplines, including an early background in interior design.
Murillo works through a distinctive technique, pouring acrylic or polymer emulsion onto a flat surface and manipulating the material as “liquid skins,” pulling and pushing the medium to create layered, fluid compositions. Each work is then sealed with a resin coating, giving the surface a depth and luminosity that enhances the interplay of color and form.
At the core of Murillo’s practice is a sustained exploration of color and place. His works weave together the ephemeral qualities of color and form to create compositions that feel both structured and atmospheric. In the works presented here, repeated, soft-edged forms unfold across the surface in measured sequences, where subtle shifts in tone and proportion create rhythm, variation, and balance.
