Thanks to my Japanese family, I was finally able to visit a place I had dreamed of for many years: Ninooka Jinja (二岡神社). This is an ancient shrine located near the town of Gotemba in the prefecture of Shizuoka.
Why bother? Well, here Akira Kurosawa shot some of the sequences of his great movie "Seven Samurai" (七人の侍, 1954). Basically, this is my favorite movie of all time. I first saw it when I was 11-12, and after that I watched it more than 35 times.
I was able to trace the location thanks to a book that was published in Japan a few years ago. The author was able to trace back all the original locations of the movie.
However, not only was the masterpiece of Kurosawa shot here, but in front of the shrine, Takeshi Kitano staged the famous dance sequence you can see at the end of "Zatoichi" (座頭市, 2003).
Epic.
