We are restoring the facade of 376-378 Broadway back to its original historical storefront and providing much needed repairs to the brickwork, windows, lintels and cornice. We have been at this location for over 30 years. 376-378 Broadway was built in 1849 by Oliver Steele, an Albany lumber merchant, after the Great August Fire of 1848 which devastated thirty-seven acres in downtown Albany. This 4-story brick building has a simple beauty with cast iron lintels, stone sills, and wonderful bracketed cornice along the top. Albany Artisans (@albanyartisans ) - Christopher Hacker and his crew are top notch craftsmen who specialize in the restoration and revival of historic homes and buildings. With numerous awards and accolades, they bring years of expertise to the project. They have been instrumental in the planning phase and are now making the magic happen. John G. Waite Architects (@jgwa_architects ) - Call it a stroke of luck to have one of the nation’s leading historic preservation architecture firms as a neighbor. John G. Waite Associates have taken an enthusiastic interest in this project from its earliest stages. They have been gracious with their time and expertise, providing important research, architectural renderings, and artistic vision. Capitalize Albany Corporation (@capalbanycorp )- Significant funding provided by the “City of Albany Small Business Facade Improvement Program” and “Downtown Albany Retail Grant Program”. It is these grant initiatives that have allowed us to move forward with this project. Capitalize Albany has been encouraging and supportive throughout. @faziomasonry @downtownalbany @thehistoricalbanyfoundation @discoveralbany @aroundalbany

Imagine one of Albany’s oldest and most significant commercial thoroughfares, and a city block that contains an impressive row of six historic buildings dating back to the early and mid-1800’s. Directly across the street is the majestic D&H Railroad Building, one of Albany’s most significant architectural treasures. Can you picture all that? Now look a little closer to the center of the block and you will find 376-378 Broadway, built in 1849 by Oliver Steele, an Albany lumber merchant, after the Great August Fire of 1848 which devastated thirty-seven acres in downtown Albany. This 4-story brick building has a simple beauty with cast iron lintels, stone sills, and wonderful bracketed cornice along the top. Now 176 years later McGreevy ProLab & ProPress are lucky to call this our home. Working in the photo lab, we often see historic photos that spark our imagination. One photo from the 1920’s of our city block revealed our building’s original facade: beautiful traditional wood framing, panel bulkheads, and large display windows with transoms (currently our existing storefront features aluminum trim, slate tiles and a double entryway angled back from the street which clashes with the block’s historic character). But that is not all, on closer inspection of the photo we found something that really intrigued us, a balcony railing at the second floor. We always wondered why our second-floor windows span from floor to ceiling; this explains it! Come to find out, this style of railing is rare in the northeast. What a discovery! Jump forward to when we learned about Capitalize Albany’s Downtown Facade Improvement and Retail Grant programs. We asked, “Wouldn’t it be great to restore our building back to its original historic facade, railing and everything?” It turns out that they agreed and are providing significant funding for the project. Now more than 4 years in the planning, construction has begun. @capalbanycorp @downtownalbany @albanyartisans @thehistoricalbanyfoundation @jgwa_architects @discoveralbany @aroundalbany
