This is how we save more than 1,000,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere a year (and havenât bought CO2 in more than a decade).
Ferment, rinse, repeat, with minimal fossil fuels used: music to sustainable breweryâs ears.
By capturing the CO2 thatâs created from our fermenting beer, we havenât purchased carbon dioxide in more than 17 years. Re-utilizing the naturally produced carbon dioxide also allows us to save more than 1,000,000 pounds of CO2 a year.
Itâs all part of our Beer Powered BeerÂŽ program, which is geared to decrease our carbon footprint as much as we can.
Curtis Holmes, your favorite plant manager, is here to walk through our carbon recapture system which has been in place at the brewery since 1998.

How we save 1,000,000 gallons of water a year đť
Since day one, weâve had to do things differently at Alaskan Brewing Company given our breweryâs location in Juneau, Alaska.
From getting materials to brewing beer to properly disposing of waste, itâs a challenge brewing beer in a place that has no road system in or out and everything must come and go on barges or by air.
How do we properly dispose of thousands of pounds of spent grain?
How do we gather enough CO2 to carbonate our beer?
How do we power the brew kettle more efficiently, or lessen our footprint on the environment as a whole?
Good thing we like a challenge.
In part one of our sustainability series, Plant Manager Curtis Holmes walks through the mash filter press. This method of extracting sugar from grain is more efficient than traditional lautering in many ways, and saves Alaskan Brewing about a million gallons of water a year. It also cuts our grain usage down by 3-5% every year.
Plus, it directly helps the next part of our sustainable practice: making fuel for the boil kettle out of the spent grain. Itâs all part of our Beer Powered BeerÂŽ program.
