A camp, a chance, a forever
It was the summer of 2021, and like hundreds of other young Nigerians, Ramatu and Dominic each packed their bags and reported to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Gombe State, nervous, hopeful, and completely unaware that their lives were about to change forever.
Amid the early morning drills, endless parade ground formations, and the organised chaos of camp life, two strangers from very different worlds, Kano and Benue, found themselves in the same space at the right time. What started as casual conversations across camp grounds grew quickly into something comfortable, something easy, something neither of them could ignore.
When orientation ended and they returned to their separate cities for service, they refused to let distance win. What followed were late nights on the phone, hours and hours of calls that stretched well past midnight, conversations that wandered from the serious to the silly, silences that were somehow still comfortable. They talked about their dreams, their families, their fears, and slowly, in those quiet hours, fell completely in love with each other's voices.
Then came 2023. Dominic moved to Lagos, chasing new opportunities, and suddenly it wasn't just different cities, it was a different world. Ramatu stayed in Kano. The distance grew, but so did their commitment. The calls got longer. The texts came faster. Every visit was counted down to and cherished. They learned what it truly meant to choose each other, not out of convenience, but out of certainty.
Through the stretch of kilometres between Lagos and Kano, through the time zones of late-night calls and early morning texts, one thing stayed constant: this was it. This was the person.
