Watching the bureaucrats of a small city turn their backs on the real issues while using our tax dollars to pay their mortgages is always fun. Especially in the burgeoning arts community, there is an obvious disconnect that is becoming more and more apparent. Here is an idea, let’s just knock down another old building and make way for over priced condos with soulless storefronts beneath that will inevitably become vacant cement hallways! Neon emcompasses two unknown Everett resident women circa 1892. Neither of them looking directly at the camera, giving an almost candid quality to the photo, and for the period that is fairly rare. I find it oddly alluring. Everett before the turn of the century was a rough and tumble town despite the way some may like to glorify it’s past, so what’re these two’s place in it. In working with this piece I found that the neon needed to be a halo of sorts for someone or something and in the process I found myself drawn to this photograph in particular. As to why? Hindsight is 20/20 and I have yet to hit that point of understanding. Till then I’ll let it soak in.

Everett has been a home for the past 2 decades and I continue to find inspiration in so many aspects of it here. The texture of ghost signs continuing to fade from brick, paint chipped and weathered and the sparse graffiti that hints at an art community still trying to find its place in the world. My first impressions of this city were jaded to say the least, as the old kimberly clark mill still loomed and spewed a hideous odor at that time. That and the rise of the opiate crisis we are still experiencing today left a sour taste in my mouth, never turning a blind eye, I witnessed every moment street side. With all that “ew everett n” has a lot to say if you are willing to dive in.

The past year has proven to be one of incredible highs and incredible lows. At the point in which I had originally created this series I was unaware of what kind of emotional rollercoaster I was about to endure however the work itself was a premonition. From the titles, to the colors and composition, the previous incarnation was foretelling what was to come. I have since challenged the composition with intersecting lines and inverted colors. Contrast, contemplation and change. These works have rode with me through a truly pivotal point in my life and I feel after the transformation I am happy to share with you all the collection. I am now finding balance and harmony, tying up loose ends and moving forward.
Change is bound to happen, so should you. build on your past and move forward.
