Two Spined Orb Weaver - Poecilopachys australasia - It was a fantastic surprise to find this spider in my local area this season. It’s not something I expected to come across in suburban Melbourne. Always exciting to to find something for the first time. I spotted it in the typical daytime resting position hiding underneath a leaf and was able to gently turn the leaf over and get one of my favourite shots this season. Swipe ➡️ for a short phone video

Crab Spider - Runcinia acuminata

This is a very common spider at my location that features a lot in my gallery. I often don’t bother shooting them but this was such a large individual with a great pose I just couldn’t pass by. I managed to angle my camera upwards to capture some blue sky in the background to get some contrasting colour with the subject. It’s definitely one of my favourite shots of this species

Here’s another shot of this stunning and rarely seen spider perched on one of her egg sacs. This was my most exciting find of the season and as it stayed in the same place for months (and it’s still there) I managed to get LOTS of images so they will be popping up in my feed quite often! During the night females emit pheromones to attract moths on which she will feed. She’s covered in moth scales, all that remains of her previous nighttime meals

One of the many Robber Flies spotted during the past season. These insects are incredible hunters, even able to catch prey on the wing. There are over 600 species here in Australia, some of them growing to enormous sizes. I have only rarely seen the huge individuals with body lengths around 5cm, this one has a body length around 2cm

Mantis Fly - This is actually a type of Lacewing that’s evolved specialised front legs similar to that of a Praying Mantis, although they are hinged differently. I didn’t have to look far for this one, it was spotted on a tree just outside my house. I quickly set up my camera and got a few shots before it flew off.

Lantern Fly - This is actually a type of Leafhopper belonging to the family Fulgoridae, noticeable for their crazy looking elongated heads. It’s been quite some time (years) since I last saw one so I was excited to get some shots. Just like other planthopper species they’re tricky to photograph as they constantly shuffle about. After a bit of patience I was able to get some images I’m pleased with.

Leaf-curling Spider - Phonognatha graeffei

As the name suggests, these spiders hide inside a curled leaf placed usually in the centre of the web. I spotted this one unusually out in the open with no web or curled leaf to be seen. It was a good opportunity to get a few shots of one, other than a couple of legs poking out from its leafy hideaway Swipe ➡️

Two-tailed Spider - Hersiilidae sp. with prey

These spiders get their common name from the extra long spinnerets that resemble two long tails.They can be found living on the bark of trees. Their exceptionally long legs give them the ability to move lightening fast to catch prey such as this ant. Body length of this individual around 8mm.

This is one of my favourite spiders to find. Apart from their stunning green colouration they’re also an undescribed species. I normally encounter them on wattle where they blend in with the green foliage. This one however was spotted on seeding grass where it was easily seen
