After four years without production, Skafida is back.
Thanks to this winter’s rains, we will be producing it again in the 2026 harvest.
Shaped like a trough, the Skafida vineyard sits on steep slopes at 180m altitude in Pyrgos, home to over 150-year-old own-rooted vines trained in the traditional kouloura method.
Σαν σήμερα, το 2024, έφυγε από κοντά μας η Σταυρούλα Κουράκου-Δραγώνα, Δρ. Χημικός και οινολόγος του Ινστιτούτου Οίνου του Ελληνικού Υπουργείου Γεωργίας.
Μια γυναίκα που αφιέρωσε τη ζωή της στην προστασία και ανάδειξη του ελληνικού αμπελώνα, υπερασπιζόμενη με γνώση και πάθος τις γηγενείς ποικιλίες.
Χάρη στο έργο και την επιμονή της, κατοχυρώθηκαν 27 Ελληνικές Ονομασίες Προέλευσης — μεταξύ αυτών και η Σαντορίνη, συμβάλλοντας καθοριστικά στη διεθνή αναγνώριση των ελληνικών κρασιών.
Κατέγραψε επίσης, μέσα από ένα πολύτιμο βιβλίο, την ιστορία του αμπελώνα της Σαντορίνης — διαφυλάσσοντας τη μνήμη, τη γνώση και την ταυτότητα ενός μοναδικού τόπου.
Η κληρονομιά της παραμένει ζωντανή σε κάθε αμπελώνα που συνεχίζει να αφηγείται την ιστορία του τόπου του.
On this day in 2024, we lost Stavroula Kourakou-Dragona, PhD chemist and oenologist at the Institute of Wine of the Hellenic Ministry of Agriculture.
A woman who dedicated her life to the protection and promotion of the Greek vineyard, passionately advocating for indigenous grape varieties.
Through her work and perseverance, 27 Greek Protected Designations of Origin were established — including Santorini — contributing decisively to the international recognition of Greek wines.
She also documented, in a remarkable and invaluable book, the history of the Santorini vineyard — preserving the memory, knowledge, and identity of a truly unique terroir.
Her legacy lives on in every vineyard that continues to tell the story of its land.

Τρεις αιώνες περίπου μετά τη βιβλική καταστροφή, το νησί ξανακατοικηθηκε. Οι νέοι άποικοι έπρεπε να επιβιώσουν σε ένα νησί άδενδρο, άνυδρο, ανεμόδαρτο, με λίγες βροχές και ένα έδαφος σκληρό που οι αέρηδες το στροβίλιζαν.
Στους 34 αιώνες που πέρασαν από τότε, το φυσικό περιβάλλον έμεινε το ίδιο. Οι Σαντορινιοί όλων των εποχών έμαδαν να ζουν μαζί του.
Η φύση τους υποχρέωσε να βρουν λύσεις για να αντιμετωπίσουν τις βιοτικές τους ανάγκες και ανταποκρίθηκαν μ'έναν τρόπο μοναδικό, γιατί μοναδικές ήταν και οι συνθήκες που αντιμετώπισαν.

About three centuries after the biblical catastrophe, the island was repopulated. The new settlers had to survive on an island without trees, without water, battered by winds, with little rainfall and a hard soil constantly stirred by the gales.
During the 34 centuries that have passed since then, the natural environment has remained the same. The people of Santorini, in every era, learned to live alongside it.
Nature forced them to find solutions to meet their basic needs, and they responded in a unique way—because the conditions they faced were equally unique.

▪️Χριστόφορος Χρυσός - Η τρίτη γενιά ▪️
Ο πατέρας του Σπύρου μεγάλωσε μέσα στα αμπελοτόπια της Σαντορίνης ακολουθώντας τον παππού του, σε μία εποχή που η αμπελοκαλλιέργεια ήταν μία από τις βασικότερες δραστηριότητες του νησιού.
Μπορεί να ξεχνιέται για ώρες με το ραδιοφωνάκι του ανάμεσα στις κουλούρες και έχει την ικανότητα να ξεχωρίζει μια Γαϊδουριά από ένα Αηδάνι, με μία ματιά.
Μετέδωσε την αγάπη για τα αμπέλια στα παιδιά του και όπως είναι φυσικό, του έχει δοθεί ο ρόλος του μέντορα.
Αν δεν βρίσκεται στους Λούρους, στη Βασαγιά, στο Ακρωτήρι, θα τον βρει κανείς στο καφενείο του Πύργου για ένα τσιπουρακι.

▪️Christoforos Chryssos – the third generation▪️
Spyros’ father grew up among the vineyards of Santorini, following his grandfather at a time when vine growing was one of the island’s main livelihoods.
He can spend hours lost among the kouloures, radio in hand, and has the rare ability to tell a Gaidouria vine from an Aidani at a single glance.
He passed his love for the vineyards on to his children and today has taken on the role of guide and mentor.
If he is not in Lourous, Vasagia or Akrotiri, one will likely find him at the cafenio in Pyrgos, enjoying a small glass of tsipouro.

Βουνό: Το απόκρημνο αμπελοτόπι που δημιουργήθηκε από…“τυχη” .
Σε υψόμετρο 380 μέτρων - ένα από τα υψηλότερα σημεία του νησιού - κοντά στο μοναστήρι του Προφήτη Ηλία, το μοναδικό αυτό κομμάτι γης , προοριζόταν για πολυτελές ξενοδοχείο. Η πολύ μεγάλη κλίση και η σύσταση του εδάφους, το έκαναν ακατάλληλο για δόμηση. Έτσι, ο Σπύρος με τον πατέρα του αποφάσισαν να το πάρουν και να το γεμίσουν αμπελιές και συγκεκριμένα Μαυροτράγανο.
Η θέα από το αμπέλι αναλογεί σε εκείνη που έχει κανείς από παράθυρο αεροπλάνου, ενώ η τρομακτική κλίση και το λευκό στρώμα ψιλής ελαφρόπετρας που είναι καλυμμένο το κάνουν εξαιρετικά δύσβατο. Πόσο μάλλον καλλιεργήσιμο!
Παρότι τα φυτά διανύουν τον όγδοο χρόνο τους - φυτεύτηκαν τον Απρίλιο του 2018 - ακόμα δεν έχουν καταφέρει να δώσουν δείγματα παραγωγής. Οι ξηρικές συνθήκες των τελευταίων ετών σε συνδυασμό με τον πολύ δυνατό αέρα λόγω υψομέτρου, δυσκολεύουν την άνθηση και την καρποφορία.
Αφήνουμε εδώ μερικές φωτογραφίες από το “Βουνό” μας με την ελπίδα το 2026 να μας χαρίσει το πρώτο Μαυροτράγανο!
Vounó: The steep vineyard that came to life… by “chance.”
At 380 meters — one of the highest points on the island — near the monastery of Prophet Elias, this unique piece of land was once intended for a luxury hotel.
Its extreme slope and soil composition made construction impossible.
So Spyros and his father decided to acquire it and plant it with vines — specifically Mavrotragano.
The view from the vineyard is similar to what one sees from an airplane window, while the dramatic inclination and the white layer of fine pumice that covers it make it incredibly hard to access — let alone cultivate.
Although the vines are now in their eighth year — planted in April 2018 — they still haven’t managed to produce fruit.
The dry conditions of recent years, combined with the strong winds at this altitude, continue to challenge flowering and fruit set.
