Happy Historic 88th Birthday to my Uncle Billy Dillon. As I’ve been going through pictures, spreading a little nostalgia and taking a trip down memory lane, I realize just how many times over the years you’ve showed up for me. From celebrations to life lessons, from quiet wisdom to powerful examples, your presence has always been there and for that, I am eternally grateful. There’s a poem called “Members vs. Men,” and Uncle Billy BΓ 60 you are the “8 thoroughly immersed” two times over. A man of integrity. A man of service. A man of purpose. A man who didn’t just pledge a fraternity, but a man who embodies the principles every single day.
As a matter of fact your legacy reaches far beyond family. Approximately 40 years ago, NASA launched a nationwide search to send a teacher into space. Out of more than 11,000 applicants in California, Uncle Billy was one of only six finalists and ultimately one of two selected to represent the entire state. He endured psychological and physical testing preparing for possible space flight alongside finalists from around the country. At a time when representation mattered deeply, he stood proudly as one of only two African Americans selected in that elite group. Though he narrowly missed the final mission selection, history still records the impact. He personally knew several members of that Challenger crew, including our Omega brother, Dr. Ronald McNair may he continue to rest in Omega Chapter. Because of pioneers like Uncle Billy, NASA’s Teacher Astronaut Program became a lasting initiative that continues today. That’s the thing about true greatness sometimes the achievement isn’t only in the destination, but in opening doors for generations that follow. 88 years young and still standing tall with grace, wisdom, dignity, and purpose. Your life has been a blueprint, your journey an inspiration, and your love a gift to all of us fortunate enough to call you family. Happy Belated Birthday Uncle Billy.
