‘Ars longa, vita brevis.'
Art is long, life is short.
To know Ryuichi was to Love him. His quiet, reserved and elegant nature were evidenced in his life, his presence, his character and most of all his music. Undoubtedly a modern master of the Piano, he did not shy from his experimentation with the extraordinary nature of sound and the humble expression of Beauty, Truth and the Human condition. As a member of the Japan society in New York City I had the humbling opportunity to meet and speak with him at a number of gatherings. I was invited to photograph him during a select few live performances, where these photographs were made.
We have lost a beautiful soul, but his music, his art lives on… reminding us that creativity and self expression are perhaps our greatest gifts to both ourselves and to humanity… that there is still much good in the world.
Ryuichi Sakamoto, you will be missed.
Respect.

For the Love of Music have I been an avid fan and supporter of UNDERWORLD UK, 25+ years on. Seeing them perform live is a moving, joyful, inspiring and transcendental experience for anyone of any age, my own 20+ such experiences notwithstanding. In July of 2019 I was invited to photograph the Duo at Roskilde Festival in Denmark and subsequently at their sold out show at Wembley Arena in London, December 2019. It was, for me, a dream come true. That my photos still live on their site is a source of joy, an unspoken connection with an act I’ve loved most of my life. In honor of Underworld Live’s upcoming show at Royal Albert Hall 03/20, a benefit for the Teenage Cancer Trust - and in anticipation of and hopeful participation in their rapidly growing touring schedule, I’ve posted a selection of my images from their live show’s.
The world is undoubtedly a better place because you’re in it, Rick & Karl.
