After the creation of Android EL01, a realistic and hauntingly beautiful female android that took the internet by storm Lily Lee, a photographer with roots in Korea and Japan, envisioned an alternate reality, where she could transcend the limitations of her physical body and where her artistry can be similarly uninhibited.
Drawing inspiration from the narrative essence of the widely acclaimed manga ‘GANTZ,’ Lily fashioned a parallel existence taking place in the same realm between fantasy and reality that the comic inhabits. She explores the dichotomy of life and death, encapsulating dehumanization and helplessness through an iconography steeped in morbid motifs. Her art also delves into the ideas of a humanity divorced from reality all while showing a hint of delicateness.
Lily’s creations reflect a social vacuum, that increases as people encounter robots more in their day-to-day lives while becoming alienated from living breathing human society. This absence breeds a strong sense of rejection and the feeling like you are an outsider from the warmth of human society. Working with these complex emotions, Lily worked well into the night and isolated herself with the intention of creating something reflective of this word view- the result is this series.
