This is the Rumbula forest memorial. In November and December 1941, the Nazis liquidated the Riga ghetto. They marched 25,000 people 12 kilometers, told them to undress, shot them, and buried them in mass graves. You can see it from the main road and the train tracks.

Cats of Riga, big and small The first one is the original that inspired all the others (well the small cats anyway; the lion comes from the city’s coat of arms). Fun fact: the football club is AMERICAN football. I have no idea if they’re connected to the Detroit team, but they should be.

The building in Riga where my grandfather briefly lived in 1923 between leaving the shtetl and coming to America. (Probably. It has been suggested by a certain buzzkill historian that the building is newer than that and also that the street numbering system has changed along with the street names, but I am so proud of all the research I did to find it, I want to believe.)

Today Joe is seven! His face has a little more silver, but he’s still the same sweet boy who makes everyone smile. (He’s also whining right now because I’m typing instead of petting him.)
