I loved Zoids when I was a kid so I wanted to build a LEGO version of one, and with so many great options it was difficult to decide. Something about the Liger Zero Jager really spoke to me. Great colour, cool wings, boosters... more wings... even more wings - the aero on this thing is utterly ridiculous but my inner child just loves the way it looks.
This was a lot of fun to build and although it was just going to be a static display I found myself turning it into a complex model where nearly everything can be articulated. The legs all move, the brick built wings fold back, the waist pivots, the neck has three joints... If you include the 16 little toes, this thing boasts 98 poseable joints, 16 of which are ball joints. So many options! 😁

Brickvention (a Melbourne LEGO exhibition) kicked off today and this is my build for it this year. LEGO works well under compression so I thought I'd go for something a bit different and try a build mostly under tension. The chain boat is suspended from the top point of the mast and gets its shape from just hanging.
The 94cm (37in) 'C' frame was by far the biggest challenge in this build - my first attempt held the weight of the boat okay but I soon found that it also needed to be laterally rigid to pass the 'table bump test' for the exhibition. The boat acts as a large pendulum so any sideways sway would twist the frame and it would fall over. It went through several design iterations and I added the 'A' frame to the back for extra stability.

Can you believe it has been almost 20 years since The Return of the King hit the screens! This is my version of the Witch-king and his fellbeast. It started off as black but I wanted to give the build some colour so ended up building him in dark blue and light grey - not accurate but black on black looked a bit boring and the Witch-king didn't stand out.
I had fun building this and learning things as I went. The biggest challenge was getting the fellbeast to stand on his two skinny little legs, and try to avoid the need for a support beam sticking out of his belly. To do this I needed to build him like a seesaw and keep the centre of gravity over his feet. Most of his body is hollow while his tail needed two of the 2x6x2 weight bricks. The legs and hip joints failed a few times and went through several redesigns as the build got heavier.
Finally, I wanted to make his wings foldable so I could pose him showing off his 4ft wingspan for 'exhibition mode', but also then collapse them down for 'shelf mode'. This was a lot more challenging than I thought it would be and probably helps to explain why LEGO don't make many dragons with collapsible wings. 😄

Satisfactory train... take two!
I don't revisit too many builds, but a few people asked for instructions for my Satisfactory train, and when I went to create some I realised that there was a lot about the build that I didn't like and wanted to change. The original build was meant to be for LEGO Ideas, but in order to make it fit LEGO tracks I had to adjust proportions slightly. After building it though, the model just sat on the shelf most of the time. So before going down the path of creating instructions I thought I would change a few things, starting with making it one stud wider (hard), and one stud taller (even harder - would not recommend). While I was there I also wanted to redesign the air brakes. So while this model looks almost exactly the same, it shares very little with the original design and ended up being almost twice the piece count. And while this one is not motorised and doesn't run on regular train tracks, I feel like it is a much better representation of the train from the game. 😊

My local LEGO group had a large display at the local show and this was my contribution. This build was all about trying to get the motion of the arms working. I don't usually build with Technic and power functions so this was a challenge and I learned a few things along the way. It runs on two motors and you can get different spinning effects depending on the combination of the two motors.
It ran for most of the weekend, broke a few times, some wear on a few parts, but overall pretty happy with how it went.

With the Hoonitron hitting the shelves this week I couldn't help but also want a little Hoonicorn so I put this together. Have to give a shout out to @ibrickeditup , @je_brickworks and @prodbrick for various influences. I went with red, white and blue lighting for my last Mustang so thought I would have some fun with that again. And unlike my last Mustang this one has an easily removable roof and happily fits a minifigure! 🥳

Each year the Brickvention team put together a small exclusive set as part of the exhibition, and this year I was lucky enough to have my design selected for the set. The sets are usually around 400-500 pieces and of something local. Ned Kelly was an Australian outlaw who roamed this part of the world almost 150 years ago. He is known for wearing a suit of bullet proof armour with an iconic helmet.
It's very weird seeing your MOC on the front of a box. The 500 odd parts for this build come in a single bag, so I have to apologise for anyone who picked one up as I realised that I used a lot of similar looking black pieces - not easy to find the right one in a pile of hundreds of other black pieces. Maybe that's why it was labelled '12+' on the box! 😬
The last photo is a bust which is an alt build that can be made using just the parts of the set.
I had a lot of fun designing this little set for the Brickvention fans and I hope that they have some fun with it too.
