While Ruth E. Carter didn’t take home the Oscar for Best Costume Design this year, I’m honored that she took the time to respond to me in January for the @hollywoodrebound newsletter.
My question to Ruth: What question do you always need to answer before you can design a single costume for a film?
Her response: “Before I design a single costume, the first question I must answer is: ‘Where am I?’
That question holds everything.
Where does the story take place geographically, historically, and emotionally? Where is the character standing in their life at that exact moment? What era are we in? What season? What time of day? Is the world around them heavy or light, quiet or volatile?
Once I understand where I am, the mood, the silhouette, the textures, and the color language begin to reveal themselves. Character-specific questions follow but ‘Where am I?’ is always the doorway.”
