an elevator warehouse in Bologna, Italy suddenly finds itself on site in Detroit, Michigan. this semester’s brief, spring 2024 @knowltonosu , called for a “gymnasium” which contained a series of spaces designed for physical movement. long game, however, takes a deeper look into what a “gym” can both mean and contain within its walls.
through delicate structural moves and relationship studies on site, this project promotes Detroit’s culture by creating a canvas for artistic expression. furthermore, this adaptive reuse project moves forward in time vertically to maximize views of the Detroit River.
ultimately, long game challenges how we as architects can minimize our footprint while simultaneously maximizing the built environment for public interaction.

more reflection amidst grad school wip! this studio project from my spring 2024 semester called for international student housing on the ohio state campus.
through a continuous study of how academic success is impacted by architecture and space, “the filter” prioritizes its occupants. in fact, the leading drivers to learning in a space of residence include collaboration with likeminded individuals, the sound of water, and the sight of vegetation (or biophilia).
with this in mind, the infrastructure is designed to produce all three using a self-watering plant system through rainwater collection. furthermore, the building is self-sustaining using this same methodology to fuel hvac systems throughout the year. each floor is subdivided, as color coded, by length of stay. international student residency can be quite unpredictable — lasting from several days to several years.

with grad school beginning next week, I wanted to take time to reflect on some past work from my bs arch @knowltonosu ! the proposition for this studio project called itself a “community shed” to foster adult learning, maker-space programming, etc.
in my research of “vocational learning” and its role in columbus, public participation and transportation were key factors to its success on site. entry and thresholds became driving factors for larger hubs of programming inside the “community shed” which are mirrored throughout the building and its representational drawings.
this is NOT your typical grandma’s shed!

with grad school beginning next week, I wanted to take time to reflect on some past work from my bs arch @knowltonosu ! this personal hand drawing exercise was inspired by the creative and playful work of @tabilbaoestudio in an effort to improve my understanding and discipline for manual drafting… a passion project of sorts!
the entirety of this work took me around three months of slow progress and detailing; sketching in projects of my own, adding nostalgic mementos and nods to personal life when I could find the time.
while “hand drawings” may not have the same effect as modern computer-aided softwares today, they surely have improved my design thinking and processes!
