MADRE MIA 002 — Artist Announcement with @agy3na AGY3NA grew up in Nürnberg, where music found him early through ensembles, baritone, percussion, and eventually the dancefloor. Sparked by Berlin’s gay nightlife, he started DJing at local clubs and bars, later returning home to Nürnberg to perform, curate, and organize as part of an independent promoter collective. His sound gravitates towards spacey, explorative, rhythm-focused House and Electro mixing across genres and decades to create a feeling of nostalgia while keeping the energy alive and moving. Afrofuturism plays a central role in his artistic work, connecting his urge for experimentation with his identity as a Black man growing up in Germany. A narrative that is felt in every set. Currently based in Leipzig, @agy3na parallels his music projects with research in cognitive neuroscience bringing the same curiosity and precision to both. We can’t wait to have him at MADRE MIA! AGY3NA grew up in Nürnberg, a city in Bavaria, Germany. At a young age, he first got in touch with music through different ensembles, where he played both baritone and percussion. Ignited by his early endeavors into Berlin’s gaynightlife, he began DJing at local clubs and bars. He soon started to perform regularly back home in Nürnberg, while also curating and organizing concerts and parties as part of an independent promoter collective. By mixing music from different genres and decades, AGY3NA often creates a feeling of nostalgia on the dancefloor, while always keeping his focus on playful rhythms and uplifting transitions. When he stands behind the decks, AGY3NA connects to his own feelings of freedom on the dancefloor. His music selection gravitates towards spacey, explorative, and rhythm-focused House and Electro. Afrofuturism, an aesthetic that explores the intersectionof African culture and futuristic icons, plays a leading role in his artistic work. It not only connects his intrinsic urge for experimentation with his artistic expression, but also links it with his identity as a black man growing up in Germany. His projects are a result of the frictions related to this intersectional identity, which creates a unique narrative that cannot be ignored when listening to his music. After finishing his first degree in psychology, AGY3NA moved to Berlin to pursue a masters in cognitive science, while finetuning his DJing skills. Two years later, he moved to Leipzig, where he currently parallels his music projects with his interests as academic researcher in the field of cognitive neuroscience.

Nuremberg’s Agy3na is up next in the Podcast roster with a call to explore his singular and nostalgic beats. The German selector got his break on his city’s dancefloors, and added experience as curator and organiser for a number of parties as part of a local promoter collective. Alongside his nighttime ventures, the fledgling talent has also been hard at work pursuing parallel studies in psychology and cognitive science, adding another layer to a varied set of inputs that has made his contributions to music all the more distinctive. There’s another layer too, his experience of blackness in Germany has brought him in contact with the world of Afrofuturism and the promise it brings, soundtracked now by a developing voice that packs a punch with its playful take on electro, house and 90s club culture. It’s music for the future, an aesthetic that plays with melody, percussion and fine-tuned technique to offer up a fresh take on old genres. In his new stomping ground of Leipzig, Dennis Höpfel blends music with research work and is sure to give the city something new and much needed. From set to set his thrashing rhythms have shown a sensitivity and awareness that’s deeply personal, a way of connecting with the world around him and giving something back. Bassiani Podcast 269 is one you don’t want to miss, an hour long studio mix loaded with rubbery basslines straight from the astral plane, Agy3na’s blazing a trail ahead and no-one’s going to stop him.
