GIRL INTERNET SHOW: THE KATI KELLI MIXTAPE unearths and reintroduces a surreal, singular body of work by the enigmatic artist. For nearly a decade before her passing in 2019, Kelli ran “Girl Internet Show,” a YouTube channel, parasocial experiment, and epically deranged one-woman universe built from scratch in her bedroom. This hand-made mixtape from Jane Schoenbrun and Jordan Wippell features a lovingly curated selection of Kelli’s online work, unreleased videos, and TOTAL BODY REMOVAL SURGERY—her first (and final) short film opus. “Kati’s work is incredibly complex. It’s viscerally exploring all these things—the commodification of physical form, the ways in which we’re trying to find ourselves in an identity through other people’s gaze online, but also through our own gaze—in a way I have never seen before. It says something about that era that she lived through online, 2009 to 2019, that is very, very core to a certain generation’s coming of age . . . 2 Good 2 Be 4Gotten in GIRLS AT THE CARNIVAL (1998) A found media sensation, GIRLS AT THE CARNIVAL is an accidental documentary that follows three high school girls as they attend “Canal Days” in Dover, OH in 1993. The VHS tape was discovered in 1997 by Derek Erdman, whose girlfriend had borrowed it from a college roommate. In Erdman’s words, “On the surface, this is a clumsy collection of camera-edited home video footage. But ultimately, it’s a sneak peek into growing up in small town during the early 1990s. It’s a treasure.” Newly preserved from the best possible source—a second generation VHS dub, as the original tape is now lost—GIRLS AT THE CARNIVAL is included as an extra on our upcoming Blu-ray release of WILDWOOD, NJ. We’re all going to MALL CITY (1983). A cinéma vérité wonder, MALL CITY is a document of mall culture that was filmed at Long Island’s Roosevelt Field Mall by filmmaker Hugh Kinniburgh. In Kinniburgh’s words, “I was in a band at the time and recorded a song called ‘Mall City.’ It was a reflection of my experience hanging out at my local suburban mall. I wanted to make a music video for the song. Around the same time, I had to produce a documentary for my film class at NYU. I thought, let’s combine the two and actually go to the real Mall City . . . so we loaded up the gear and headed to the ‘Eldorado’ of malls.” Newly preserved from the only tape master in existence, MALL CITY is included as an extra on our Blu-ray release of WILDWOOD, NJ.
