This helmet survived a Venetian fortress, a Greek island, and 600 years of history — and it’s still here. Meet the Great Sallet — an Italian combat helmet dating from the late 14th to mid-15th century, now in the Arms & Armor collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Gallery 373). In 1840, a remarkable cache of medieval helmets and armor fragments was unearthed in the ruins of a Venetian fortress at Chalcis, on the Greek island of Euboea. This piece was among them — a relic of a world where northern Italian workshops were supplying armor to soldiers across the Mediterranean. The sallet (Italian: celata) emerged as the dominant combat helmet of the 15th century, gradually replacing the bascinet. It was adopted across Italy, France, England, Germany, and Hungary by the mid-1400s. Unlike heavier enclosed helms, later Italian sallets became open-faced with gracefully curved surfaces — favored especially by archers and crossbowmen who needed uninterrupted vision. The term “sallet” covers a wide variety of 15th-century helmets: open-faced or, if visored, leaving the lower face and neck exposed. Many knights wore a separate chin guard called a bevor to fill that gap. This specific piece weighs approximately 4 lb. 13 oz. (2,184 g) — light enough for a soldier to move, heavy enough to stop a sword blow. One helmet. One fortress. Centuries of silence. 🏛️ The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 📍 Gallery 373 — Arms & Armor 🔗 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/26447 #MedievalHistory #ArmsAndArmor #Sallet #15thCentury #MetMuseum MedievalHelmet KnightArmor HistoricalArtifact MedievalArt AncientHistory OpenAccess PublicDomain MuseumCollection HistoryOfWarfare ItalianMedieval

🪖 This face has been waiting 1,400 years for you to look at it. In the summer of 1939, as Europe edged toward war, an amateur archaeologist named Basil Brown was quietly digging through a grassy mound in Suffolk, England. What he found beneath the soil would rewrite history. The Sutton Hoo helmet dates to around 620–625 AD and is widely associated with King Rædwald of East Anglia — a warrior-king so powerful that his elaborate burial has been called the “British Tutankhamun.” When the burial chamber collapsed over the centuries, the helmet shattered into more than 100 fragments. It took the conservation team at the British Museum years to reconstruct. What you see today is a painstaking puzzle of iron and bronze, reassembled fragment by fragment. And the face itself? Across the mask, a bird spreads its wings — its body forming the nose, its tail the moustache, its wings the eyebrows. Where the bird soars up, it meets the jaws of a dragon plunging down, its iron body inlaid with silver wire curving over the crest. This isn’t just armor. It’s a statement. Today the original is on display in Room 41 of the British Museum — one of only four known complete helmets from Anglo-Saxon England. And just this month, new research from the National Museum of Denmark suggests the helmet’s origins may be even more surprising — a recently discovered metal stamp found on a Danish island bears striking similarities to the helmet’s warrior motifs, raising the possibility that it was crafted in a Danish workshop and traveled to England. A king’s face. A dragon’s wings. Fourteen centuries of silence.

🗡️ A Medieval Sword Lost… and Found After 600 Years Somewhere in medieval Poland, a sword was lost. Centuries passed. Battles ended, kingdoms changed, and the memory of its owner disappeared. Yet the sword remained — hidden beneath the surface of a peat bog. Discovered centuries later, this 13th–14th century sword was found in remarkably preserved condition. The unique environment of the bog protected the metal from corrosion, allowing the weapon to survive almost intact. Today, it is kept at the Stanisław Staszic Museum in Poland, where it stands as a silent witness to the past. But the most intriguing part is not the sword itself — it is the story we will never fully know. Was it lost in the chaos of battle? Did it belong to a knight who never returned? Or was it deliberately abandoned, hidden away in a moment of fear or defeat? No record remains. Only the object survived. And sometimes, that is all history leaves behind. ⚔️ What do you think happened to the man who once carried this sword? 📚 Source: National Geographic — Medieval sword found in Polish peat bog /history/article/medieval-sword-found-poland-peat-bog-spd
