We’re taking an exciting step forward for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. đź‘€ Â
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and The Jed Foundation (JED) are thrilled to announce the intent to merge as equals to form AFSP/JED, the nation’s largest nonprofit dedicated to preventing suicide across the lifespan and bringing hope to those affected by suicide loss or risk. 👏Â
By combining AFSP’s national reach and research leadership with JED’s expertise in youth mental health, we’ll be able to save more lives, support more communities, and bring hope to millions across the country. Â

Evidence-based care during high-risk transitions is critical.đź’™
Because of research, we know that people living with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders face elevated suicide rates, particularly in the weeks and months after psychiatric hospitalization.
Despite this vulnerability, these individuals are often excluded from suicide prevention research, leaving major gaps in evidence-based care during high-risk transitions.
With AFSP’s support, Dr. Brandon Gaudiano piloted an adapted version of the Coping Long Term with Active Suicide Program for people with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

That's a wrap on our 2026 Advocacy Forum! 📣
We celebrate and thank the hundreds of volunteer advocates who met with their state representatives to fight suicide. đź’™
Yesterday, at our Hill Day, advocates met with over 273 representatives and their offices to champion the Barriers to Suicide Act, the STOP Suicide Act, and the Daniel J. Harvey, Jr. and Adam Lambert Improving Servicemember Transition to Reduce Veteran Suicide Act.
At AFSP, we're committed to continuing to advocate for lifesaving suicide prevention legislation like these critical pieces of legislation.

#AFSPAdvocacyDay #StopSuicide
In 2024, 12.8 million adults experienced serious thoughts of suicide in the United States. đź’™
The STOP Suicide Act — a 2026 Advocacy Forum Legislative Priority — establishes a competitive grant program within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to support suicide specific stabilization services for individuals experiencing serious thoughts of suicide. In other words, the STOP Suicide Act ensures that when someone needs help at a vulnerable moment, they receive care designed to save their life.

6,398 veterans died by suicide in 2023. đź’™
That's why the Improving Servicemember Transition to Reduce Veteran Suicide Act is a 2026 Advocacy Forum Legislative Priority.
The bill will help prevent suicide by enabling veterans to recognize suicide risk factors and seek behavioral health support. By educating service members and veterans as they separate from the Armed Forces, we can help them seek care, support their mental health and help prevent suicide.

Too many young people are struggling in silence. đź’™
Recent data shows that two in ten U.S. students seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, and nearly one in ten reported attempting suicide. Today, suicide is the third leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 24.
But connection can make a powerful difference. 🫂✨
This Mental Health Awareness Month, A Million in May is about turning awareness into action. Your support helps ensure young people have someone to talk to, research that protects them, and communities that know how to respond.
