The longest I had to wait for a bus was eight minutes. And for a train, three minutes. That’s all. One can achieve this in a city with a population of over two million, and a broader metropolitan population of 13 million. One can see why the Paris Metro is the second busiest in Europe. What is that popular quote? ‘A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It is where the rich use public transport.’ Every time I travel to the continent, I am amazed at the efficiency of the public transport system here. It is no different in Paris. It is abundant, regular, and reliable. Is this not what we should focus all our energy on when trying to solve the congestion problem in Cape Town? Fast-track the rollout of the MyCiti network. Expedite the implementation of the MOU signed with Metrorail to exponentially improve the regularity of the train service on the routes with high density. And acknowledge that the mini-bus taxi industry is going to be a crucial element to any public transport solution. Well, it is another beautiful Autumn day in Paris, and I am about to indulge in a scrumptious brunch from the much-loved Cafe Hugo. The city is bustling away, getting on with the business of the day, doing it in style and grace, of course.

Is it not amazing that the art which moves one the most, almost to the core, is art which hauntingly beautiful? Was it the late Freddie Mercury who once instructed that we should never try to understand modern art if you want to enjoy it? Hours went by unnoticed this Wednesday. Bliss.

'God made me the way I am, and I accept myself. I am who I am, and I am proud of myself' - Caster Semenya A most deserved standing ovation for her at the end of our session at the Franschhoek Literary Festival. What an incredible human being.
