It’s been a year since launching Licensed, our monthly Substack! Every week, A Fresh Bunch receives applications for representation from artists just like you. Our team reviews every application and wishes we could give tips & direction to each artist who takes the time to apply. If you’re an artist who has applied to our agency (or any other) and not received an offer of representation, you’re probably left wondering why. While every portfolio is different, there are things successful applications and portfolios have in common, things driven by what our agency knows the licensing market is looking for. What is the licensing market looking for? That’s where Licensed comes in. Licensed gives artists insight into the licensing market via monthly micro creative briefs. Subscribers get monthly micro creative briefs based on actual creative briefs used by A Fresh Bunch artists. Each micro brief will be focused on the themes, subjects and occasions that agents & manufacturers are most often looking for. Each month will also offer doses of the same friendly chatter our team and artists exchange every day, full of the inspiration we rely on to manage work and life. Artists! Have you ever wondered what we look for when we consider an artist for representation? In a word: Christmas. 🎄🎅❄️⛄️Christmas artwork makes up more than 75% of the art licensing market so when reviewing an artist's portfolio we like to see: ❄️ Lots of Christmas artwork, both placement and repeat ❄️ Art styles that are complimentary to but not overlapping with our current artists The above info is specific to A Fresh Bunch, but here are some Dos and Don'ts: 🟩 DO visit an agency's website and study it 🟩 DO compare your portfolio to what you see and consider whether it's a fit (if you don't see your preferred medium and subject matter represented on an agency's website then chances are that agency isn't a fit for your work) 🟩 DO follow that agency's process, usually outlined on their website, for inquiring about or applying for representation if after considering all of the above you think your work is a fit for the agency 🛑 DON'T inquire about representation without having completed the steps above!
