Many Rwandan dancers are incredibly talented. You can feel the passion, the discipline, and the love for dance. Yet, very few of them break through to the international level.
In a short conversation with
@afrellie , a Rwandan dancer living in the diaspora, one thing stood out clearly: perspective matters.
She shared that dancers in Rwanda often want to reach the international stage, while those abroad sometimes want to reconnect with the Rwandan audience. In her words, “Everybody wants what they don’t have.”
Living abroad comes with one big advantage: access. It’s often easier to reach global trends, global audiences, and global opportunities. But she also admits the opposite is true: when you’re in Rwanda, breaking into international spaces takes more intention and strategy.
So what can Rwanda-based dancers focus on?
According to #Afrellie, dancing to globally trending songs is a powerful starting point. Trends travel fast, and when your content speaks a global language, it can cross borders easily. Talent alone isn’t always enough; visibility, timing, and relevance matter.
Another thing is trying to connect with the artists and work with them whenever they came across the country you’re living in or start connecting with some people in their management.
#Afrellie doesn’t say this as motivation talk. It’s something she personally does and has seen real results from. So far, she has already worked with different artists, including
@kevinkade_ and
@alynsano , when they visited the #USA where she lives.
