Orientation (2024)
3d printed Stainless steel parts
Pcb boards (copper plated fiberglass epoxy resin sheets)
126 x 95 x 5 cm
Using a deep learning model trained on thousands of online images, Orientation generates a desert landscape —an imagined oasis shaped by collective vision. The work reflects on how Western imagi- naries construct the East through images of water, scarcity, and desire. What appears as a place of abundance is revealed as a technological mirage — a memory of longing built from pixels and copper, where myth, control, and image converge.

ORIENTATION, 2024
This work contains an image created using a deep learning model depicting a desert landscape with palm trees, in the style of a war bond. The image refers to posters from early 20th-century Jerusalem and Israeli art from that period, using similar materials like the copper that was widely used at that time.
“Orientation” offers a view of how an external perspective flattens a place into orientalist symbols. This process also occurs in deep learning models, where the model learns from the information we provide and replicates the orientalist views of the West on the East. In this work, the palm trees and desert landscape symbolize the Orient as perceived by the West—an exotic and distant place. The image is not only a collective memory but also shows how technology reproduces and solidifies existing thought patterns, emphasizing the power of images in shaping cultural and historical perceptions. By referring to these posters and artworks, it is also inspired by propaganda campaigns that carry an external “Western” perspective and serve as a tool to shape collective memory and public consciousness. The image serves a political interest, which is part of the overall narrative ingrained in deep learning models, echoing that ancient sin.

Printed circuit board, the word “SPICE” referring to the science fiction novel “Dune” (1965), a psychedelic drug that extends life and grants youthful vigor. Conversely, the “SPICE” system developed by Rafael is an acronym for Smart, Precise Impact, Cost-Effective, a guidance kit for converting unguided bombs into precision-guided bombs with a three-meter hit radius.
This system is sold by Israel to the U.S., India, Greece, Brazil, and other countries.
In the background of the inscription, there are two skulls in interference, the skulls unfolded into contour lines like a topographic map were combined side by side to create an abstract image reminiscent of guilloche elements appearing in war bonds for document authentication purposes.

"AGE OF EMPIRES"
A generator fueled by gasoline uses a combustion engine to convert chemical energy into electricity, powering a PC. This setup is uniquely designed to run the 1999 strategy game, Age of Empires by Microsoft. crafted a custom map within the game, featuring a world enveloped in dense forest and inhabited by a single, isolated villager. This lone character is trapped, with his only task being to chop down the endless trees around him—a task that can only continue as long as the generator is supplied with gasoline.
'Time Machine', An iron-made Ouroboros-shaped sword lies encased within a transparent glass chamber. The surrounding mist of saltwater, coupled with the oxygen-feeding system, engenders a highly corrosive environment, hastening the rusting process. In these extreme conditions, a chamber of Anti-preserves forms, causing captivating self-inflicted damage to its contained subject. Time seemingly warps within the chamber, orchestrating the transformation of the sword and bestowing upon it the essence of a relic.
