"Dear Mama"
Acrylic + Ankara fabric on canvas
39.75 x 29.5 inches | 2023
In Dear Mama, a son rests in the grass, a rotary phone in hand, its cord leading nowhere. The phone is unplugged, but the connection is real. He’s not calling through wires; he’s calling through the wind, the sun, the earth beneath him.
This piece speaks to those who’ve lost their mothers and find solace in nature, speaking to her spirit in the quiet. Affen’s use of vibrant acrylic hues and Ankara fabrics honors Black womanhood with warmth, depth, and cultural pride.

Affen Segun is one of the nine artists participating in our current online exhibition “Childhood Reimagined” running until October 14 on @artsy and our website. Click on the link in bio to discover more!
Affen Segun (b.1993 Lagos, Nigeria) is a self-taught artist who began drawing at the age of 10 after being inspired by the popular Nigerian comic “Super Strikers”. Eager to develop his skills, Segun watched YouTube videos and practiced painting portraits of Nigerian celebrities such as Wizkid, Davido, Mayorkun and Don Jazzy. He posted them on Instagram and quickly made a name for himself.
Since 2018, Segun has developed a distinctive style, inspired by the colourful ankara fabric worn by his Yoruba mother for occasions and celebrations. Segun attributes his creativity to his mother and paid homage to her with his first solo exhibition in Lagos titled, Omo Adérónké, (son of Adérónké).
