I should be angry, I know. Angry that you just left, unceremoniously, wordlessly into the beyond. Angry that you have such a hold on my days, like it used to be bright and then someone just turned off the switch, shrouding everything in ink black darkness. I should be angry, I know.
Then, I think of how lucky I have been to have had someone like you in my life. How it feels to be anchored, tethered, buoyed and free all at once. A feeling that ran stronger than blood, solidified in laughs, debates, music, movies, writing and so much more.
I have never said this out loud: I was a wayward teenager who had no guidance and no career plan. I ended up just following you everywhere. You wanted to do MassCom, so I tried at XIC and JMI (and failed). You wanted to write and I started writing too. In the end, I became a shadow of what you were and wanted to be and continue to do so.
I hope someday to live out the dreams you had and return the blessing it has been to have had you in my life.
I know you’ve already made cool friends up there, probably hanging out with Stan Lee and Hitchcock and Kurt Cobain. Just make sure you save me a seat for whenever that day comes.
