My mom and I are so incredibly grateful to everyone who has reached out to check in and see how we are doing, donated, shared our fundraiser, offered a prayer in our behalf or a place to stay. In fact, mami was joking that with all the invites to stay with friends and family she could literally go on a road trip for a year and stay in multiple states all around the country.
On a personal note, I will admit to choking up more than once seeing the names of high school and college friends I haven’t seen in 30 years reach out with a kind word, sharing our story in their feeds or joining the list of donors; not to mention co-workers and friends from the film industry who themselves have been hurting from the work slow down in Hollywood over the last few years. I can’t overstate how incredibly humbling that is.
As for us, we are doing ok. The shock has worn off somewhat and been replaced with days full of to do’s, paperwork, claims, calls and emails. My mom has beeen staying with me and we are taking it day by day, and trust that slowly things will get better.
In this time of immense tragedy, as countless stories of these devastating fires flood our feeds, and we all grieve for our city, our neighbors, our homes, and those who have lost their lives, we are deeply moved by the overwhelming outpouring of love and support we have received from each and everyone of you. Again, we can’t thank you enough.
Gracias,
Mayra and Aleshka

I’m a pretty private person and hardly ever post on facebook anymore but I felt the need today in the wake of the tragedy that is unfolding in Los Angeles right now. My mom and I are safe but we learned this morning that she lost her house and everything she owned in the Pacific Palisades fire last night. In fact Pacific Palisades itself is nearly all gone and the fire is at 0% containment still because of the 60 mph winds. Images show a catastrophic landscape that looks like a war zone, the scale of destruction is unimaginable. For my part, I am praying Santa Monica stays safe and the fire doesn’t spread to where I live as well. My house is only a few miles from the evacuation zone. Both my mom and me are actually in Puerto Rico right now and have been for the last month, as we came to bury my dear grandmother in her homeland. The irony in all of this is that yesterday was exactly a month since we lost her. To say that our losses over the last month have been devastating is a massive understatement but thru the tears and shock right now I am trying really hard to remind myself that we will survive this like we have so many other things and mostly that we still have each other. Because ultimately that is all that matters. Friends in LA, I hope you and your loved ones are all safe and that if you sustain any losses in these horrible fires they are only material. Hold your loved ones near. 💔
