I am simply over the moon (and truthfully gobsmacked) to share that our love story and wedding is being featured in the …drumroll please… @nytimes . I know. I can’t believe it either. My great love of the @nytstyle section is no secret. I read it in print every Sunday, and have even been saving the “Vows” articles since our engagement, not knowing that ultimately we would end up in that very section. I’m just so thrilled and honestly insanely grateful to be a small inclusion in one of the world’s greatest publications. Thank you @thejennyblock for the thoughtful article and your wonderful spirit. Got it from my Mama! Strong, resilient, compassionate and of course, life of the party! So blessed to have the best Mom who is always there for me no matter what. Double blessed to now have a loving and fabulous Mother-in-law who made me feel part of the family from the very beginning. When we talk about burnout, we usually point to workload, boundaries, or bad bosses. But there’s a deeper layer most of us never examine , the cultural soil we grew up in. I grew up in the New York/New England area, a region settled by Puritans who believed hard work wasn’t just practical, it was moral. Idleness was sin. Productivity was virtue. Four hundred years later, that ethos hasn’t gone anywhere it’s woven into how many of us, from Boston down through NYC, define our worth. Researchers have long studied this. Max Weber called it the “Protestant work ethic.” More recent work on American regional cultures (Colin Woodard, David Hackett Fischer) shows that the geography you’re raised in shapes your relationship with rest, ambition, and the word “enough” in ways most people never notice. So when thinking about tackling burnout this #mentalhealthawarenessmonth you may also want to zoom all the way out and identify the unspoken cultural rules you have taken in about what it means to “work hard” or “rest”, or redefining success all together.
